This book aims to provide a critical reflection on existing epistemologies of ageing and alternatively, introduce post-structuralist insights to ageing studies and later life. We will examine how ageing appears to be individualised in neo-liberal western culture. It can be argued that whilst ageing has become individualised, the limitation of existing epistemologies is in their ontological war with each other: positive ageing versus social oppression. What this book seeks to do is to provide an alternative exploration of ageing by introducing post-structuralist theory using two themes of 'narrative' (stories of ageing) and 'trust' (relations of ageing) -- both as exemplar social issues and conceptual tools. Indeed, we need to ask what are the conditions which allow narrative and trust to be formed and performed relating to ageing. It is within the processes of categorisation that established social life as the 'social arena' within which the issues of social problems were to be debated needs theoretical reflection.

Personalisation in British social care is linked to both the principle and process that every adult who receives support, whether provided by statutory services or funded by them, will have choice and control over the shape of that support in all care settings. This adult social care policy agenda is firmly focused on the development of personalisation of support. The overall aim is for social care service users to have control over how money allocated to their care is spent. This book examines the social welfare system in Britain, with a particular focus on personal budgets and the quality of care received.

This book focuses on five themes that link to a compelling argument in the study of ageing and social policy. Firstly, there is a policy context of neo-liberal social policy and implications for older people which is presented, as well as the idea that social construction of ageing focuses on 'ageing body' and its discursive construction by medical and cultural representations. Additional topics discussed include the history of the present develops ideas and discourses of social welfare and ageing; surveillance, power/knowledge and policing of subjects focused on care management and dystopian features of 'care' with related issues of 'elder abuse' and 'institutional abuse'. Reconstructing ageing looks at rethinking power relations and technologies of self in how subjects of knowledge can 'resist' medical discourses and professional power.

This book provides a critical reflection on theory, welfare and ageing. An examination on how ageing appears to be moving from individualisation to a globalised world is provided. This is particularly apparent in a move toward neo-liberal discourses of consumerism which artificially appears to indicate a reallocation of attention from responding to welfare problems such as 'abuse', for example to an attempt to define what it is to allegedly 'age positively' in an era were older people have never had it so good. This trend is happening in western culture and greatly reconstructs both the formal expectations and personal experiences of later life less in terms of welfare but more in terms of leisure. The book is written against the backdrop of such neo-conservative cultural theories in social gerontology.
