Underserved Populations in Science Education: Enhancement Through Learning Community Participation A positive relationship between college anatomy students' achievement and academic language proficiency in the context of a learning community was studied. For many students the barrier to learning science is language. It was determined that a relationship exists between low academic language proficiency and lack of success among students, in particular failure among at-risk minority and language- minority students. The study involved students of Anatomy classes at a community college in Central California having a high percentage of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Students from each semester participated in the academic language proficiency and science achievement studies. A number of students enrolled in a Learning Community (LC) that included instruction in academic language in the context of the anatomy course content. Other students also participated in Peer-led Support (PLS) sessions. Several participated in a textbook use study and in a Cooperative-Learning (CL) study.

Pour de nombreux tudiants, l'obstacle l'apprentissage des sciences est la langue. Il a t d termin qu'il existe une relation entre une faible ma trise de la langue acad mique et le manque de r ussite des tudiants, en particulier l' chec chez les tudiants des minorit s risque et des minorit s linguistiques. L' tude a port sur les tudiants des classes d'anatomie d'un community college de Californie centrale ayant un pourcentage lev d' tudiants de diverses cultures et langues. Les tudiants de chaque semestre ont particip aux tudes sur les comp tences linguistiques et les r sultats scientifiques. Un certain nombre d' tudiants se sont inscrits dans une communaut d'apprentissage (Learning Community - LC) qui comprenait un enseignement de la langue acad mique dans le contexte du contenu du cours d'anatomie. D'autres tudiants ont galement particip des sessions de soutien par les pairs (PLS). Plusieurs ont particip une tude sur l'utilisation des manuels scolaires et une tude sur l'apprentissage coop ratif (CL).

Es wurde festgestellt, dass ein Zusammenhang zwischen geringen akademischen Sprachkenntnissen und mangelndem Erfolg bei den Studenten besteht, insbesondere Misserfolg bei Studenten aus Risiko- und Sprachminderheiten. An der Studie nahmen Studenten der Anatomieklassen an einem Community College in Zentralkalifornien teil, die einen hohen Prozentsatz kulturell und sprachlich unterschiedlicher Studenten haben. Die Studenten jedes Semesters nahmen an den Studien zu den akademischen Sprachkenntnissen und wissenschaftlichen Leistungen teil.
