John Byrne is one of Scotland's most prolific and accomplished artists. Published on the occasion of an exhibition celebrating his contribution to the art of portraiture, this book illustrates the technical skill, brilliant draughtsmanship, versatility and inventiveness, fun and gravity that he has brought to the genre. It includes previously unpublished works from private collections, many of which are on public display for the first time. Byrne has many strings to his artistic bow. As well as being a painter he is a successful playwright. Throughout his work he explores the many facets of human nature, confronting the uniqueness and complexity of individuals. It is these skills that are mirrored in his portraiture. As well as some rare examples of Byrne's commissioned portraits, this publication celebrates some of the artist's closest relationships, being for the most part, portraits of his friends and family. To accompany this, the book features an 'in conversation' between the artist and his good friend and owner of Brown's Gallery, Tain, Gordon Brown.

Spanning the 1950s to the 70s, the plays capture the rebellious mood of a post-war generation growing up to a backdrop of James Dean, Elvis, sharp-suited glamour, hope and despair. John Byrne takes the slab room he worked in and makes it pure theatre: the scams, the dreams, the aloof but gorgeous girl, the despair of life back home, the obligatory tormenting of the office 'weed', and the mandatory boy chat and pranks all help the day to pass. Phil and Spanky explode onto the stage in a classic vaudeville double-act. Now considered one of Scotland's defining literary works of the twentieth century, the Slab Boys Trilogy premiered at the Traverse back in the late 1970s and early 80s taking Scotland, then Britain, and then Broadway quickly by storm. The Traverse revived the Slab Boys Trilogy for the theatre's fortieth anniversary in November 2003.

This is not just an account of my bicycle ride across the country. Many people have ridden bicycles across our great nation. My ride is different. It's the story of a brother's love for his sister. It's a tale of firefighters everywhere bonded by brotherly love, faithfulness, a desire to serve and a willingness to work together. It's a young man's search for his roots ending at his grandfather's firehouse on the other side of the continent. It's a demonstration of everyday Americans willing to help and give - in any way they can.My purpose in telling this story is to describe and share the unusual acts of kindness, love, strength, challenges and determination I experienced during my 36-day cross country jaunt. - John ByrneAfter the author's sister was paralyzed in a accident, John realized he needed a way to provide her with her own vehicle with the controls she could use to be able to attend college, and live as normally as possible. This was his answer --- ride his bicycle across the country, from fire station to fire station from San Francisco to the Brooklyn Bridge. Donations poured in to support John's ride.
