Shakespeare's Great Tragedies

Shakespeare's Great Tragedies

John Hardy

Shakespeare's great tragedies portray through their richly imagined worlds the inescapable fact of human mortality. As the work of a great creative genius, they are so diverse that critical formulas used to describe their overall impact tend to be somewhat suspect. Their impact follows from a response to the entire dramatic action, what is felt at the end with the weight or experience of the whole play behind it. It draws on how our feelings and judgement are exercised and engaged throughout the drama. Shakespeare portrays what life can be like, without pandering to the wish for something easier to contemplate. Something more invigorating than consolation is provided, such art at its greatest achieving the strength of truth. What it compels is a complex acceptance, reflected in Edgar's words, "The weight of this sad time we must obey". Not only implicit positives give value to these plays. Their significance finally results from what they imaginatively invite their audience to experience and witness. This gives a sense not only of the value of life, but also of what can threaten it.

Cyclone Tracy demolished Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory when it struck during the night of Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning, 1974. Over almost ten hours the small, intense, but slow-moving weather system left a swathe of destruction across the entire town. Few buildings escaped.Sixty-six people died, many of them on vessels which put to sea, while many hundreds were injured. The destruction of essential services made a reduction in the population of about 40,000 imperative and what followed was the greatest peacetime evacuation of an Australian community with nearly 10,000 leaving by road and more than 20,000 evacuated by air.But as some of these stories show, many stayed or returned quickly to help rebuild the city they loved. Every survivor has a story and just over 50 of them have responded to the invitation to tell theirs, some for the first time, in their own words. We admire them for their resilience and thank them for their contribution to this remarkable collection.

"Noch Mehr Andalusische Geschichten" is a second collection of eighteen short stories set in southern Spain, mainly in the Axarqu a in Andaluc a. The first volume, "Andalusische Geschichten," was published in April 2014. The stories contain murder, extortion, robbery, obsession, child abuse, identity fraud, people trafficking and other dark subjects, but usually with a light touch and in many cases humour. In some there is a sense of uncertainty and ambiguity as to the actual events. All have a twist in the tail. The stories are all fictional but some of the events or places around which the plot revolves are based on actual events or real locations. One example of this is the interplay in the bar between the young barman and the English diner in 'Happy Families'. With the exception of such places as M laga, Torre del Mar, Nerja and V lez M laga, all the village names are fictitious, though some are based on an actual location or even a combination of more than one. All the stories together try to give a picture of the area, from the beaches of the Costa del Sol into the mountainous hinterland. The day to day life, the fiestas and the interplay between the local populace, the ex pat community and the hordes of holidaymakers who together inhabit the region.

This is a collection of 18 short stories. Or, more correctly, it could be called a 'Baker's Eighteen', as there is an extra story, '6.10 from Darlington'. This story is available free as an E-story on the webpage www.sixtenfromdarlington.t15.org. However, to those without e-readers, and who only read 'real' books, it is included here so that they are not discriminated against. I had originally intended that this book would be called 'Bagatelle', and it was advertised as such. But on its completion, I decided to change the title to 'Twisted Tales', as I thought it a better, and more accurate, description. Like 'Andaluc an Mysteries' and 'More Andaluc an Mysteries', several of the stories in this book (6 in total) are set in and around the Axarqu a, a region of southern Spain. The remaining ones are placed in a variety of locations, nine in the UK, one a spoof on the Sherlock Holmes stories, but set in Madrid, and two in the Middle East. Several of the stories contain events either witnessed or related to me, but using fictionalised settings and characters. None of the people in the stories are based on any person, alive or dead, but are all, as are the plots, figments of my imagination. All bar one. 'Little Billie' is the exception to this, and is dedicated to William Pearson, the real 'Little Billie'. He was a teacher at Sir William Turner's Grammar School, Coatham, Redcar, and taught me maths and physics. He was known to all the boys by his nickname, and relished it himself. The events in Smiths' bookshop in Redcar High Street are almost verbatim of what took place between him and me some time after I had left school. We did not go for a coffee together, but did spend at least 15 minutes chatting in the shop, when he showed an astonishing, to me, knowledge of me and my time at the school. He was a friendly and charming man, and proved my awe and fear of him as a schoolmaster to be unfounded. The rest of the story about the theft, his children and the apprehension of the robbers, is of course, pure fiction. I have a good friend, Ali Tebbs, who used to live in Latchingdon, in the Dengie Hundreds in Essex. She was a member of L.A.D.S., the Latchingdon Amateur Dramatic Society. I went along to several of the performances that she was in, and greatly enjoyed them. The story 'The Last Curtain Call' is written as a tribute to her and them. It is, of course, not based on any real person or production of L.A.D.S.

East Side Stories is a collection of 18 completely new stories, plus 'The Othona Valediction' which has so far only been published as an E-story, and therefore has not been accessible to anyone who only reads 'real' books. All the stories are set in locations down the east side of England, from Hadrian's Wall to the Thames. Locations include the Pennines, the North York Moors, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and the Dengie Hundreds in Essex. These are areas well known to me, as I have lived in Teesside, North Yorkshire, the Pennines, Norfolk and Essex during my life in England, before moving to southern Spain in 1994. The stories are of crime and mystery, some have a touch of humour and all have a twist in the tail.

This is a story of crime, suspense, intrigue and romance that takes place in Teesside and North Yorkshire in the exceptionally cold winter of 1946/7 in the aftermath of the 2nd World War. Lewis Sudbury, an ex-SOE agent who was a British spy in Berlin, is trying to forget the trauma of that time. He takes up a position as a teacher in a boys' grammar school in Redcar, where shortly after he starts there one of his students and his sister go missing. Then the bodies of two more children are found in the nearby moors. Lewis liaises on behalf of his school with the police on both cases. Meanwhile, a former SS officer is seeking revenge on him and both MI5 and MI6 become involved. The climax occurs on the February day when blizzards brought the country to a standstill.

This is a collection of twenty stories of people involved in conflicts. They include conflicts of many and various kinds, from the domestic to the international. Some of the stories are bleak, as stories of war and hostilities often are, whilst others are much lighter and even of a humorous nature. Many or them are romances and love stories. The book is not a polemic either for or against war. Rather it shows how easy it is for people to be drawn into situations of conflict, with or without their consent and how humanity can shine through. The conflicts and wars which are behind the stories range in time from 1000 BC up until the present day. They take place mainly in Europe and the Middle East and the majority are events that involve Great Britain, Spain and Israel, and the hostilities that they were involved in.For the main part the stories concern not soldiers or combatants but civilians that are caught up in the various conflicts. In many cases they became involved through no desire of fault of their own.

'DEATH IN THE SUN and other stories' are short stories of crime and mystery, the majority of them set in southern Spain in the Axarqu a, where John has lived for over 23 years. Most of the rest are in North Yorkshire, Essex and Norfolk. The stories contain murder, exploitation, terrorist activity and obsession, some relating back to events in the Spanish Civil War. Whilst some contain dark events, most have a light and sometimes humorous vein, and all have a twist in the tail or an ambiguous ending.
