The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. During the 1980s, the use of log-linear statistical models in behavioral and life-science inquiry increased markedly. Concurrently, log-linear theory, developed largely during the previous decade, has been streamlined and refined. An aim of this second edition is to acquaint old and new readers with these refinements. The most significant change that has occurred is the increased availability of user-oriented computer programs for the performance of log-linear analyses. During this period, all major statistical packages (i.e., BMDP, SAS, and SPSS) introduced either new or improved computer programs designed specifically for the specification and fitting of log-linear models. Consequently, the enhanced ability of practicing researchers to perform log-linear analyses has been accompanied by an enhanced need for didactic explanations of this system of analysis--for explanations of log-linear theory and method that can be readily understood by practitioners and graduate students who do not possess recondite backgrounds in mathematical statistics, yet who desire to obtain a level of understanding beyond that which is typically offered by cookbook approaches to statistical topics. Another aim of this second edition is to fulfill this need. As before, this edition has been prepared for readers who have had at least one intermediate-level course in applied statistics in which the basic principles of factorial analysis of variance and multiple regression were discussed. Also as before, to assist readers with modest preparation in the analysis of quantitative/categorical data, this edition will review topics in such relevant areas as basic probability theory, traditional chi-square goodness-of-fit procedures, and the method of maximum-likelihood estimation. Readers with strong backgrounds in statistics can skim over these preparatory discussions, contained largely in Chapters 2 and 3, without prejudice.

Abstract: The widow is a recurrent character type in the novels of Anthony Trollope. Widows are major characters in many of the forty-seven novels. Ordinarily Trollope tends to repeat and to endorse the conventionally-approved patterns of behavior that governed the values of women who expected to marry or who were already married. He approves or disapproves of maidens and wives in his fiction according to their belief in or adherence to the standard female role of wife. However, widows stand outside the nineteenth-century social code that glorified marriage and advocated female submission to the husband. In dealing with widows and widowhood, Trollope is able to examine honestly and thoroughly the social and emotional problems of a mature woman living outside male control, without disturbing his own or his readers' sense of the proprieties. Trollope 's awareness of widows is singular among major nineteenth century novelists and leads him to conclude that the widows' apparent freedom is an illusion. Virtually all of his widows are defeated socially and emotionally by their widowhood and by their sex. This dissertation studies every major widow in the novels, together with others more minor; these widows demonstrate the evolution of Trollope's perception and artistry. His awareness of widows developed chronologically. The earliest widows (1847-58) are little more than background characters; their successors (1859-61) are prominently displayed but incompletely explored. With the next group of widows (1862-64) Trollope begins to show closelyexamined widows in ordinary life. His most sophisticated widows (1864-71) possess money and/or strong obsessions. Trollope's last widows (1873-82) do not develop beyond his earlier revelations. The dissertation is organized chronologically. The Introduction provides a synopsis of existing Trollope criticism. Chapter I surveys the status of middle-class English women in the nineteenth century. Chapter II covers the widows of 1847-58; Chapter III explores those of 1859- 61. The widows of 1862-64 are examined in Chapter IV and the widows of 1864-71 are seen in Chapter V. Chapter VI is concerned with the widows of 1873-82. The Conclusion contains the findings of this study. This book examines how Russia’s entrepreneurs operate in a business environment beset with risk and uncertainty. The challenges they may encounter include an unreliable judicial system, insecure property rights, arbitrary interference from officials, as well as corruption, harassment, suspicion and violence. Based on extensive original research, including fieldwork within three businesses, this book explores how entrepreneurs survive and some thrive. It focuses on the kind of obstacles they face from day to day, details their motivations, rationale and methods, and describes the actual relationship between ordinary entrepreneurs and the state, providing new insights into business-state relations.

A Treatise upon Planting, Gardening, and the Management of the Hot-House

This practical guide was first published in 1776: in this reissue of the two-volume 1777 second edition, the two volumes have been bound in one book. John Kennedy (d.1790) was the gardener to Sir Thomas Gascoigne, the owner of Parlington Hall in Yorkshire, and his book is addressed to landowners and their head gardeners. His concern is with 'the planting of poor wastes, moorlands, and apparent mountains', as well as with hothouse plants such as pineapples and vines, and delicacies including asparagus and cultivated mushrooms. At the other end of the scale, he also provides sections on field-cabbages, carrots and turnips as feed for cattle. In each of these areas, he gives detailed descriptions of the preparation of the ground, the tools needed, propagation techniques, and the subsequent management of pests and diseases. This is a fascinating treatise on the gardening skills needed on a grand eighteenth-century agricultural estate.
