The Internationalization of Colonialism
John Kent has written the first full scholarly study of British and French policy in their West African colonies during the Second World War and its aftermath. His detailed analysis shows how the broader requirements of Anglo-French relations in Europe and the wider world shaped the formulation and execution of the two colonial powers' policy in Black Africa. He examines the guiding principles of the policy-makers in London and Paris and the problems experienced by the colonial administrators themselves. This is a genuinely comparative study, thoroughly grounded in both French and British archives, and it sheds new light on the development of Anglo-French co-operation in colonial matters in this period.
America, the UN and Decolonisation
This book examines the role of the UN in conflict resolution in Africa in the 1960s and its relation to the Cold War.Focussing on the Congo, this book shows how the preservation of the existing economic and social order in the Congo was a key element in the decolonisation process and the fighting of the Cold War. It links the international aspects of British, Belgian, Angolan and Central African Federation involvement with the roles of the US and UN in order to understand how supplies to and profits from the Congo were producing growing African problems. This large Central African country played a vital, if not fully understood role, in the Cold War and proved to be a fascinating example of complex African problems of decolonisation interacting with international forces, in ways that revealed a great deal about the problems inherent in colonialism and its end. This book will be of much interest to students of US foreign policy, the UN, Cold War history and international history in general.

William Temple (1881–1944) was the outstanding British religious leader of the twentieth century. He believed that the ‘modern state’ was incomplete without a modern Christian church, which should set the moral and political tone of the community. His political and religious best seller, Christianity and Social Order, which was published as a Penguin Special in 1942, was one of the sources of the wide support for the British welfare state of the 1950s. Temple was the most successful and controversial of British ‘priests in politics’ because as an Archbishop he combined the idea of national unity rooted in a common set of religious/moral values with a constant demand for political change in the direction of greater social equality. He thus combined conservative and radical impulses to a remarkable degree. This is a study of Temple’s public life and policy in Britain, and of his part in the movement to unite the world’s Protestant churches.

Wesley and the Wesleyans challenges the cherished myth that at the moment when the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution were threatening the soul of eighteenth-century England, an evangelical revival - led by the Wesleys - saved it. It will interest anyone concerned with the history of Methodism and the Church of England, the Evangelical tradition, and eighteenth-century religious thought and experience. The book starts from the assumption that there was no large-scale religious revival during the eighteenth century. Instead, the role of what is called 'primary religion' - the normal human search for ways of drawing supernatural power into the private life of the individual - is analysed in terms of the emergence of the Wesleyan societies from the Church of England. The Wesleys' achievements are reassessed; there is fresh, unsentimental description of the role of women in the movement, and an unexpectedly sympathetic picture emerges of Hanoverian Anglicanism.

Observations On the Causes, Symptoms and Nature of Scrofula ... Scurvy and Cancer
Observations On the Causes, Symptoms and Nature of Scrofula ... Scurvy and Cancer, by John Kent, provides a fascinating glimpse into 18th-century medical thought and practice. This historical work delves into the understanding and treatment of three significant diseases of the period: scrofula (tuberculosis of the lymph nodes), scurvy (vitamin C deficiency), and cancer. Kent's observations offer insights into the prevailing theories regarding the causes and symptoms of these ailments, as well as the treatments that were employed at the time. This book serves as a valuable resource for those interested in the history of medicine, shedding light on the evolution of medical knowledge and the challenges faced by physicians in an era before modern diagnostic tools and treatments. A must-read for anyone studying the historical context of disease and medical practice. ""This book is a discussion of the part played by religious revivalism, and by the American professional religious revivalist, in the religious world of nineteenth-century England. It was during the Victorian period that popular Protestantism began to lose its grip on English society. This was true despite the strength of the denominations. It is therefore against a background of slowly changing popular religion that the role of the professional revivalist has to be studied."" --From the First Chapter
