The Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment series, previously known as SVEC (Studies on Voltaire and the Eighteenth Century), has published over 500 peer-reviewed scholarly volumes since 1955 as part of the Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford. To date, there is very little scholarship on the Sirven case, and even less has been produced in English, with only a few pages given to the case in a handful of volumes dedicated to Voltaire over the past fifty years. This author considers this to be a great and surprising oversight, given that the Sirven case stands as one of the great causes célèbres in Voltaire’s career. This volume represents the first monograph to be published in the English-speaking world on the Sirven affair and seeks to begin filling a significant gap in existing scholarship through showing how Sirven warrants a variety of conclusions that differ from those that apply to the Calas affair, which has totally overshadowed the current literature.
