Written with the verve and panache that characterized his ministry, this moving and compelling memoir, Sentamu, tells the story of the Right Revd Dr John Sentamu’s journey from his childhood in rural Uganda to his elevation to the British House of Lords in 2021. Born in 1949, John Tucker Mugabi Sentamu became Archbishop of York in 2005 – the first Black Archbishop in the Church of England. Before that, he was Bishop of Birmingham (2002–2005), and Bishop of Stepney (1996–2002), when he served on the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Team and chaired the Damilola Taylor Murder Investigation Review. Throughout his long and eventful ministry, Archbishop Sentamu has campaigned on a range of important issues – including the family, gay relationships, multiculturalism, poverty, race, slavery, the welfare of young people, and conflict and injustice abroad. Sentamu’s decision to flee his native country in 1974 followed a turbulent time when, as an advocate of the High Court of Uganda, he was imprisoned for speaking out against the oppressive rule of Idi Amin. Since then, his stated priorities have been ‘to seek God's rule of justice, peace and love’ and ‘to be part of God's movement of change, standing at the intersection where human need and God's love meet.’ Sentamu’s inspiring autobiography demonstrates the life-transforming power of God’s love and one man’s incredible journey to be part of God’s movement of change.

The aim of this book is nothing less than to assess and reset the terms of the debate about the kind of nation we want to be. It asks: What are the essential values we need for building a just, sustainable and compassionate society in which all can participate? Chapters by expert economic, political, religious and social thinkers, including contributions by Lord Adonis, Sir Philip Mawer, Oliver O'Donovan, Andrew Sentance, Julia Unwin and Archbishop Justin Welby Addresses crucial questions about the moral principles that undergird the way Britain is governed Written for people of any or no religious background who are concerned about the values that influence our political attitudes and decisions Faced with a period of change as great as that of the 1930s, the continued cohesion of our society is at risk as expectations of ever-rising prosperity are challenged and many struggle to make ends meet. It is within this context that the contributors to this book examine some fundamental questions. How can we draw upon the wellsprings of social solidarity today? What would a new social contract - a new understanding about the respective rights and obligations of the individual citizen and the state - look like today? At a time when budgets and other resources are being reduced, what are the principles we should adopt to distribute them? In short, what values can the Christian faith bring to the table to help address the problems we face today? These and other core questions about the kind of society we seek lie at the heart of this book.

‘This is the hour of crisis: it is high time for you to wake out of sleep, for deliverance is nearer to us now than it was when first we believed.’ St Paul's encouraging words to the Christians in Rome are the springboard for the Archbishop of York's Advent book for 2019. With prayers and stimulating questions for reflection at the end of each daily meditation, here is fresh spiritual food for the Advent journey – pressed down, shaken together and running over. ‘Wake up! Clean up! Feed up! Grow up!’ Walk alongside Archbishop Sentamu this Advent, as he discusses the meaning and influence of those four gospel imperatives in this lively and invigorating book.
