Trevena's tale takes place in the moor-side parish of Scarthorn and its village of Lendon. The local pub, known simply as The Frog, is a meeting place named for a huge stuffed frog that is grotesquely displayed there; the preserved carcass is closely connected with the history of one of the characters and holds a secret as well. After 40 years, Henry Lewenden returns to this location, his childhood home, as a stranger even though he is a member of an esteemed family. Because Henry is effectively an outsider, many of the village folk are suspicious of his intentions. He announces that he will conduct an experiment in simple living and takes up residence at a modest cottage to prove it. Henry meets and interacts with numerous people in the village, including Richard Blisland and his two unmarried daughters, Carrie and Julia. Henry asks Carrie Blisland to assist him in writing a book and they develop an amiable relationship. Will their friendship blossom into romance or will he be forced out of town alone?

The Custom of the Manor is set during the 16th century when English monasteries were being shuttered by Henry VIII and spiritual life in the kingdom was dramatically changing. Felix is a handsome young savage who is rescued from his barbaric surroundings by a mysterious patron from the local priory in Dunheved who promises him a civilized life in exchange for Felix's blind obedience. His fidelity results in the reckless murder of Nicholas Land, lord of the manor. After completing his part of the bargain, Felix becomes entangled in a plan for control of the manor occupied by Land's orphaned daughter, Margaret. The two youths become attracted to each other for different reasons. What will the law require Margaret to do to keep the manor? Will justice catch up to Felix? Will he confess his crime to Margaret or remain silent in order to cling to his relationship with her?

The sun was slowly withdrawing his beams from the fortress of Quebec, which had been established some thirty years back, and was then occupied by a handful of settlers and soldiers, to the number of 120, under the military governorship of Arnaud de Roussilac. The French politicians of the seventeenth century were determined colony builders. However humble the settler, he was known and watched, advanced or detained, by the vigilant government of Paris. The very farms were an extension, however slight, of the militarism of France, and a standing menace to Britain. Where, further south, Englishmen founded a rude settlement, the French in the north had responded by a military post. The policy of peace taught by that intrepid adventurer, Jacques Cartier, exactly a hundred years before, had become almost forgotten. "This country is now owned by your Majesty," Cartier had written. "Your Majesty has only to make gifts to the headmen of the Iroquois tribes and assure them of your friendship, to make the land yours for ever."
