A man awakens out of a nightmare back to a grim future Chicago. Most of the millions in the city escape the Hardworld and spend their entire lives jacked in to a less grim everyday reality where they work, eat, dream, and sleep. But now some are failing, fading out, dying, for no apparent reason. The man who designed the program that Chicagoans live in must find out why. Will he too become a victim?
