This is a fast moving story about a genetic engineering experiment that went awry. The tale is set in various universities. What really goes on within them comes to light along with their personal relationships, competitive interactions and romances of academics. Professor William Huntington and his group create the first artificial multicellular organism which is an extensively studied nematode, a small worm-like creature. This nematode is designed to be identical to the original although its DNA has been modified to facilitate genetic manipulations. Tragically the methods used in its making have allowed the incorporation of genetic material from a distant nematode species which is a plant pathogen. In spite of safeguards, an accident allows the artificial nematode to escape from the Huntington lab. In modern science everything from falsifying data to the outright theft of the ideas of others frequently takes place. University politics are also detailed through the lives of the main characters, all of whose fates are greatly affected by the nematode plague.
This is a story about a natural athlete whose father was world renown in this regard. It is the sequel to "Nature's Gift" and takes place in Israel and Italy in his early years and then mostly in the US. The tale quickly moves through Jacob's time in the Army, to his travels in Asia and finally to his days as a student at a prestigious American university. Almost by instinct he is attracted to American football where he soon becomes a star both as a quarterback and linebacker. But trouble erupts and he leaves the University to become a professional.

In the near future the world has become dystopic. Autocracies reign and democracies are scarce. With the aid of modern technology and especially artificial intelligence, the possibility for the repressed peoples to reestablish their freedom and basic rights is essentially nil and humanity cannot escape the cul-de-sac in which it finds itself. An American scientist decides that somehow the population of the world must be drastically reduced in order to break the system and give humanity a second chance. He is a virologist at the CDC and works on viral-caused diseases in man. So it is not surprising that he chooses to create a killer-virus to attain his objective. Using genetic engineering techniques, he builds a virus which will almost cause all infected individuals to die. However, the FBI is on his trail, albeit that this is unrelated to his sinister plan. Who will win the race? And what happen if he succeeds? This is a fast-moving story full of suspense and intrigue that is based on science and human nature in all its beauty, cruelty and ugliness.
