The first transcontinental railroad in the USA was completed in 1869. In the following years, until the turn of the twentieth century, many more railroads were built by different companies. Passenger trains declined from the 1950s and today there is only a minimal long-distance passenger service operated by Amtrak, leaving the railroads to concentrate on moving freight. Modern diesels for long-distance mainline freight trains are up to 4,400 hp with six axles. The West Coast Main Line is the principal main line linking London to the West Midlands, the North West and Scotland. The majority of rail freight on the line is container traffic. Some of this traffic is marine containers from the southern ports of Southampton, Felixstowe and the recently opened London Gateway to the North West and Scotland. In addition there are domestic containers from Daventry to Scotland. The route also sees other traffic on various sections including cars, cement, china clay, coal, limestone, nuclear flasks, oil, steel and timber, as well as Royal Mail trains linking London, Warrington and Glasgow. On the route there are freight yards at Wembley, Crewe, Warrington, Carlisle and Mossend. The route includes the well-known climbs up to Shap Summit in Cumbria and Beattock Summit in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. On this electrified route freight is hauled by a mixture of diesel and electric locomotives from all the main rail freight operators in Britain. Electric locomotives include Class 86s from the 1960s as well as more modern Class 90s and 92s, through to the recently built Class 88s. Diesels locomotives are mainly Class 66s although some older British Rail-era diesels still operate on certain workings.

The first British Jewish chaplain, Reverend Francis Cohen, was appointed in 1892 and ministered in Britain. It was the vision and creation of Reverend Michael Adler, DSO, for commissioned Jewish chaplains to serve alongside soldiers in the field in wartime. At the age of 46, from 1915, Adler spent over three years on the Western Front. Twenty Jewish chaplains served with the British Army in the First World War, and fifty-six Army and RAF chaplains, including twelve locally recruited in mandate Palestine, in the Second. They served in many of the vast theatres of both wars, travelling huge distances in search of widely dispersed Jewish soldiers. Jewish chaplaincy consolidated the integration of a minority faith into the British armed forces. This ground-breaking contribution to British, Jewish, religious and military history is based upon years of research in Victorian archives, military records and family papers.
