It is 1945, WW2 is still raging when Vi and Jack accompany Freddy on a dangerous journey behind enemy lines in search of his parents. Freddy's grew up in Germany, his Dad worked for the British Government. In August 1939, just before the outbreak of WW2, his parents sent him to England to stay with Aunty Win. Although they intended to return to England the following month his parents never arrived. He hasn't heard from them since 1942. Rumours say the war is almost over but Freddy can't wait he decides to go to Germany and find his parents. When his cousin Vi discovers his plan she insists on joining him. Jack a young evacuee who lives with them says they're not leaving him behind. The story takes place early in 1945 and the children experience danger, excitement, despair and sadness during their journey. They develop friendships and gain an insight into their own strengths and weaknesses as they cope with the reality and anguish of war.
