Brazilian educational thinker Paulo Freire (1921-1997) belonged to those who worked to better human beings and society by opposing all forms of oppression. At this historical juncture, as predatory capitalism reigns and the planet is on the brink of climate catastrophe, we need Freire and his thoughts more than ever. Suomen tietokirjailijat on palkinnut hänet oppikirjapalkinnolla.

Freire työskenteli 1970-luvulla Kirkkojen maailmanneuvostossa Genevessä, kiersi maailmaa ja keskusteli kasvattajien sekä yhteiskunnallisten liikkeiden toimijoiden kanssa oikeudenmukaisen maailman luomisesta. Juha Suorannan tutkimus seuraa Freiren matkoja Euroopassa ja Afrikan vapaustaistelujen keskellä. Samalla hän näyttää, miten Freiren pedagogiikasta tuli osa monien ryhmien poliittista kamppailua. Freiren vuonna 1968 julkaistu ja vuonna 2005 suomennettu pääteos Sorrettujen pedagogiikka kuuluu alansa viitatuimpiin. Suorannan tuore teos tuo uutta tietoa Freiren toiminnasta vuosikymmenellä, joka teki hänestä maailmankuulun. Juha Suoranta on aikuiskasvatuksen professori Tampereen yliopistossa. Finland is known worldwide as a laboratory of the information society. The Finnish model combines information technology know-how with welfare state structures where equality seems to prevail. Can we take this picture at face value, or is it too optimistic? In this book we approach the case of Finland from children's perspectives by exploring what ICTs (information and communication technology) and media they use, how they use them, and what their thoughts are concerning this use? How does media become a part of children's everyday lives? The book is based on a nationally representative child survey supplemented by interviews where eight- to ten-year old Finnish children have been the key informants.

Artistic Research Methodology argues for artistic research as a context-aware and historical process that works inside-in, beginning and ending with acts committed within an artistic practice. An artistic researcher has three intertwined tasks. First, she needs to develop and perfect her own artistic skills, vision and conceptual thinking. This happens by developing a vocabulary for not only making but also writing and speaking about art. Second, an artistic researcher has to contribute to academia and the «invisible colleges» around the world by proposing an argument in the form of a thesis, a narrative; and in so doing helping to build a community of artistic research and the bodies of knowledge these communities rely on. Third, she must communicate with practicing artists and the larger public, performing what one could call «audience education». There is no way of being an engaged and committed partner in a community without taking sides, without getting entangled in issues of power. Consequently, the methodology of artistic research has to be responsive both to the requirements of the practice and the traditions of science. Here the embedded nature of the knowledge produced through artistic research becomes evident.
