Kira, a twenty-year-old transline worker, directs spaceships in transit to Earth. An alien captain, from a planet whose citizens are so secretive no pictures of them exist, starts getting friendly. The two talk through the transline, holding long conversations. Kira admires his thoughts, but wishes she knew what he looked like. Although she's never seen him, she's falling in love.

This series begins with ScholarShipBound. In Shaara of Westla, Shaarvan saves his wife from being a slave on Freinana, and carries her off to Westla, the artificial planet of the Shapechanger. There she is reunited with her son, Shaarac and with her lost memories. She begins training with the Priestess Tessa, and for a short time there is happiness, but war on Altar threatens, which leaves Shaara under the protectorship of four huge Warrior Shapechanger. One of them is supposed to be her temporary husband.
When aliens descend on Planet Beatnik, fifteen-year-old Caralee, three-year-old Lissie and nineteen-year-old Danuel flee but are soon captured by aliens who make demands on their lives. The three are taught how the planet provides everything they need for their survival but are required to follow certain rules. One day the three of them capture wild herd spiders and ride them into the fruit orchards. There, they discover that Lissie can communicate with her spider, and Danuel and Caralee learn that they can mind-meld with each other. As the story continues, it only gets weirder as Herd Spiders, Aliens, and the Planet Burska all seem to disagree on what needs to be done for the good of all.
