Dealing with color is a complex subject: influenced by standards, fashions, and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition, and personal preferences. The color swatches and systems for describing color common today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particular color? More than ten years ago, the color chemist Katrin Trautwein established a pigment factory, starting out from Le Corbusier’s color palette. She now has more than 900 recipes for paint from which she has proposed – based on her work with architects, designers, and historical preservationists – a selection of 128 colors that produce pleasant results on their own and also combine well. Each color is presented with a sample; their potential uses and significance are also discussed. Katrin Trautwein has lectured throughout the world on how to approach colors, given seminars, given expert opinions, advised architects, taught painters, and worked as a restorer.

Whether we like a room or not largely depends on the design of the color landscape that we perceive when we enter the room. What is the key? In what direction should I move? What is the light like, and how is the atmosphere? Does the environment have a harmonious effect? Do I want to stay here? The colors in a room provide us with answers to such questions. Color is a subject that is as fascinating as it is multifaceted; it is a subject that can only be understood in context – function and emotion, light and shadow, language and material. All these factors are presented in a practical guide to color concepts that create a harmonious accord between people, space, color, and light. How can we design built spaces that affect us in an equally beneficial, timeless, and harmonious way as the color landscapes of nature?

Will ich hier verweilen?

Is there such a thing as "pure black"? In this book, Katrin Trautwein shows us how many shades of grey and different pigments can go into creating this special colour, to which countless meanings are attached both in Western culture and other parts of the world. By means of high-grade screen prints, the publication makes the wide range of blacks tangible to the reader, belying the notion that black is the mere absence of light. On the contrary, the different black tones are uniquely suited to emphasizing nuances in lightness and darkness. These are the shades that create moods within architecture. A room can be designed without colour, but not without light and shadow - without them, it would have no form. The fascinating palette of black tones is accompanied by an essay that illuminates the subject from different perspectives.
