First published in 2003. This final volume in the VIII-volume set titled The Early Sociology of Culture, deals with human culture, and confines itself neither to contemporary life nor to Western European civilization. The author argues that, if the volume demonstrates an inadequacy of the methods used in interpreting culture and progress, the study is justified. The chapters are separated into three parts: Culture and Culture Change; Theories of Progress and The Criteria of Progress.

This work includes articles written by three scholars and leaders and a critique of their works. Introductory commentary provides insight into their individual personalities. Mr. Nolting, U.S. ambassador to Vietnam in the early 1960's, spent 18 years in the Department of State concerned primarily with European and Far Eastern affairs. Mr. Mosher was a Distinguished Professor at Syracuse, Berkeley, and the University of Virginia before joining the Miller Center to devote his time to research and writing. He is especially well known for his works on bureaucracy and presidential transitions. Professor David was an economist who worked for the Bureau of the Budget and later for the Brookings Institution, where he became the leading authority on party governance, nominating processes, and conventions. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Virginia from 1960 to 1977. Co-published with the Miller Center for Public Affairs.

Featuring a new fifty-page interview with Hans J. Morgenthau by Bernard Johnson, this volume on the renowed scholar and philosopher demonstrates how pervasive is his mark on the study of international relations and political philosophy. The interview illuminates Morgenthau's intellectual development in Europe between the world wars and in the United States. It is in recognition of his unsurpassed contribution to the field of international relations and political philosophy that this collection of contributions from distinguished scholars has been assembled. The continuation and refinement of his work in this book prove the lasting value of his philosophical truths in the understanding of human nature, the role of power at all levels of society, and his concept of national interest.

These are short stories. Ranging from a Hit Man becoming infatuated with the person he is meant to kill to a person getting into a philosophical debate with their executioner to answering the fundamental nature of consciousness, these stories will entertain readers with its clever insights and biting commentary. Interlaced throughout are connected stories of two families whose lives are weaved together more than they could ever know. Some stories are much longer than others, but what they lack in brevity they make up for in levity. This rhymes, which means it is true.
