This book provides a comprehensive and thorough interpretation of Beck's theory of the (world) risk society, from its original formulation up to his sudden death on New Year's Day 2015. Beck's entire body of work is divided into four interrelated phases, which are successively presented and discussed, namely: the original theory of risk society (from 1986 onwards); the theory of the world risk society (from 1996 onwards); the theory of cosmopolitanism and cosmopolitanization (from 1996 onwards); and the theory of 'metamorphosis', 'emancipatory catastrophism and 'global imagined risk communities' (2013–16). The book thus demonstrates how Beck’s concept of the (world) risk society has given us a new language or a special lens that enables us to better understand contemporary society’s complexity and its myriad of human-made uncertainties in terms of climate change, terrorist threats, global pandemics, economic crises, and migration crises.

Den tyske sociolog og samfundsforsker Ulrich Beck (1944-2015) var en af de seneste årtiers mest markante tænkere. Ulrich Beck - en kritisk indføring i teorien om verdensrisikosamfundet giver en kritisk indføring i teorien om verdensrisikosamfundet, og bogen viser, hvordan Beck i sit senere forfatterskab har videreudviklet de første tanker til en teori om, hvad han betegner som verdensrisikosamfund og kosmopolitisme. Bogen giver en samlet fremstilling og fortolkning af Becks teorikorpus, der i sin kompleksitet kan være svært at overskue i sin helhed. Bogen hjælper dermed den læser på vej, der ønsker at stifte nærmere bekendtskab med indsigterne i Becks kritiske samtidsdiagnose. I takt med at Becks teori har vundet stadig større udbredelse, er den naturligvis også blevet udsat for kritik fra forskellig side. Spørgsmålet er imidlertid, om kritikken trækker tæppet væk under teorien eller blot peger på en række mangler og svage punkter, der bør udbedres, hvis teorien skal kunne fremstå som et plausibelt bud på en kritisk samtidsdiagnose af det nutidige samfund. Dette diskuteres til sidst i bogen. Ulrich Beck - en kritisk indføring i teorien om verdensrisikosamfundet adskiller sig fra de få eksisterende introduktioner til Becks teori ved at give et samlet overblik og samtidig dykke kritisk ned i fundamentet for samtidsdiagnosen. Bogen er skrevet af Klaus Rasborg, lektor på Institut for samfundsvidenskab og erhverv på Roskilde Universitet. Han har tidligere skrevet om Ulrich Beck, risiko- og frygtsamfund og nye typer af usikkerhed i det moderne samfund.
