Hun ble født i -Demonte, nær Cuneo i Piemonte,- ikke langt fra grensen til Frankrike, og hun studerte kunst og litteratur i -Torino. I 1954 mottok hun Prix Veillon for sin første roman "Maria" , som året før kom ut i Elio Vittorinis -berømte bokserie- -I Gettoni . Hun døde i Milano- 94 år gammel og er regnet som en av sin tids viktigste forfattere i Italia. Dette er første gang hun blir oversatt til norsk.
