In recent years hospice care has gone from a little-known medical alternative to a major movement in health care. By emphasizing palliative care and pain management rather than curative treatment, hospices allow the terminally ill to spend the last days, week, or months of their lives in their own homes, cared for by their families under the supervision of a team of specially trained hospice workers that includes doctors, nurses, social workers, and volunteers. Larry Beresford, whose previous collection of poems, Under a Gibbous Moon: The Adventures of Mister Funky, was issued by Broken Shadow Publications, hones in on the subject of family from multiple perspectives in the eleven poems in this book. They explore family of origin, family of choice, family married into, mixed and blended families, multi-cultural families, family across generations, even cross-species encounters with gray whale families of Baja California. A particular inspiration comes from the wonders and terrors of becoming a grandfather, a heart-stopping revelation for the poet, who did not have children of his own.
