A superstar podcast producer delivers a unique, laugh-out-loud, cry quietly invitation to examine our delusional obsessions with work in this eye-opening book—part memoir, part mentoring, part confessional guide—that dissects the emotional ties that bind us . . . to our desks. For any type-A, high achiever out there, this is the book that sees you. And provides a cathartic, funny, emotionally charged insight into what drives the perfection-oriented. Laura Mayer was born a girlboss. As a child in suburban Illinois, she played "V.P. of Sales" in her bedroom, dictating important memos to her twin brother and swapping Judy Blume for the buzzy business books of the day. While other kids dreamed of being pop stars or pro athletes, little Laura had a single-minded focus: the corporate ladder. Some thirty years later, from a dizzying perch on that very ladder—as Executive Producer of Podcasts at ABC News, with such blockbuster shows as Revisionist History, Bad Blood, and Happier with Gretchen Rubin to her credit—and with an identity shaped by annual reviews, performance indicators, and “executive presence” (whatever that means) a disillusioned Laura is calling "bullshit" on the whole work-is-life thing. Sort of. Tryhard is a gonzo memoir for 9-to-5 devotees who have read every business book and C-suite-or-bust instruction manual yet still find we’re burnt out and unhappy. It is also a deeply personal and poignant examination of why we race at all. Laura detangles this delusional mess of priorities we've created, rejects the “boss-at-any-cost” culture, and invites us to laugh at ourselves (and her) along the way. She offers the modern office worker a new path forward through her own revelations, and implores us, for the love of God, to chill out a little bit. This is Laura's messy, somewhat enlightened, possibly transformative, heart-wrenching and always entertaining story—a one-of-a-kind sightseeing trip on the Great American hamster wheel.
Capability Brown and the English Landscape Garden
The name Lancelot 'Capability' Brown (1716–83) has become synonymous with the eighteenth-century English landscape garden. Ruthlessly efficient, he could stake out the 'capabilities' of a particular terrain within an hour on horseback. Rising to the position of Master Gardener to George III, his trademark features included bald lawns, clumped trees, lakes and enclosing belts of woodland on the estate's perimeter, setting a park formula that lasted well into the next century. Laura Mayer presents a concise and colourful introduction to Brown and other leading landscape gardeners of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, such as William Kent, Richard Payne Knight and Humphry Repton. She explores how competing ideas in garden design were shaped both by changes in prevailing fashion and by the innovations of particular designers, and why Brown's designs are currently considered to be the epitome of landscape gardening in this period.

Humphry Repton (1752–1818) ambitiously styled himself Capability Brown’s successor: the century’s next great improver of landed property. With his rare combination of skills – he was a talented topographical sketcher with a unique ability to judge the shifting needs of his patrons – over thirty years Repton amassed an incredible four hundred commissions; his famous Red Books, illustrated to help clients visualise the potential of their properties, did much to encourage the appreciation of landscape aesthetics, especially among the rising middle classes. With colourful illustrations and detailed site investigations, this book traces Repton’s landscape designs from Picturesque wildernesses like Blaise Castle to the progressive Gardenesque style of Endsleigh in Devon. It is both a perfect visitor’s guide to the gardens and an introduction to the theory of Repton’s work.
The Lion Inside: A Story to Teach Young Children and Adults about Anger
As a parent of a young child, do you struggle with anger?Does your young child seem to struggle with anger? This storybook shows the interconnectedness of emotions (particularly anger) between parent and child and what each of their roles are in that interplay. From the Introduction: This is a storybook, but it is also a teaching book. This book may make you and/or your child feel uncomfortable sometimes. That approach is intentional-for it is in the moments of uncomfortableness that we have an opportunity to pause, to observe, to grow. This book is also unique in its focus: There are great storybooks that teach kids about self-regulation or self-calming strategies, such as taking deep breaths, talking about feelings, and exiting an upsetting situation. Instead, this book is about 1) adults modeling self-regulation; 2) adults apologizing for disrespectful behavior towards their child; 3) adults co-regulating with their child; and 4) adults understanding the point-of-view of a child. These four facets of Gentle Parenting are essential because the nervous systems of young children (from infancy to kindergarten) are designed primarily to synchronize with their caretakers. In other words, young children mirror the mood or emotional state of others, also called co-regulation. Their nervous system can auto-regulate, that is calm down automatically after some time, but then stress hormones can remain high in their bodies. Therefore, adults need to practice self-regulation strategies so that a young child can be calmed by the nervous system of a caretaker (via co-regulation) and also can learn how to practice self-regulation strategies over time.It is also important to note that even Gentle Parents get angry Gentle Parents practice reasonable, loving expectations with themselves and their children. This includes realizing that anger is a normal feeling that protects us from injustice; it deserves to be acknowledged with compassion; and adults who act in anger need to repair with those they have hurt.
