Provins Travel, France. Tourism. Provins is a Mecca of medieval architecture, one of the best preserved in France. Provins absolutely deserves a visit. Since 13 December 2001, Provins is listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, in view of the many monuments remained virtually untouched since the Middle Ages. Protected by impressive ramparts, Provins is the ancient capital of the Counts of Champagne. Previously (before the fourteenth century), it has built its prosperity through trade fairs. Merchants from all over Europe used to meet in Provins. Today, several times a year, Provins commemorates its medieval past by colorful festivals. Provins used to be a quite prosperous commercial town and the envy of their neighbors and famed for its trouv res (Northern France troubadours). Safe behind its fortified walls, it shone brightly during the 12th and 13th centuries, when popular Champagne Fairs were celebrated. Today, in just over an hour from Paris, visitors can admire the remaining 2km of the medieval fortifications and climb Caesar's Tower which is a high point literally and figuratively of a trip to the town. The structure dominates the old town and has been employed as a watch tower, bell tower and even a prison since its creation in the 12th century. The tower commands impressive views of the surrounding town and countryside and allows you to fully appreciate the medieval architecture. Provins. It's worth visiting the Tithe Barn as well as it is now a museum dedicated to the Champagne fairs and offers an insight into what life was like in Medieval Provins. There is a 12th century house in the town that hosts the Provins Museum. It is worth a visit as it will provide a historical feel of the town and the region, even from before the fairs enhanced Provins' situation in Europe

Reims Travel Guide, France. Information Tourism. Reims, the home of Champagne (the most celebrated and celebratory wine in the world), is the main city of the Champagne area. There stands one of the most beautiful buildings of the Middle Ages in Europe, one that is filled with history: almost all French kings were crowned there for about 1,000 years. Most of the old houses were destroyed during World War I, and the city was extensively rebuilt in the 1920's in an Art Deco style. Reims, pernay and Ay are the main places of champagne production. Many of the largest champagne producing houses, referred to as les grandes marques, have their head office in Reims. Most are open for champagne tasting and tours by appointment only. Champagne is aged in the many chalk caves and tunnels, some originating in the Roman period, located deep inside the ground. The city centre is fairly small and easily walkable, with many streets for pedestrians only, mainly in the shopping area. Cathedral (Notre-Dame de Reims) the French equivalent, somewhat, for England's Westminster Abbey, the cathedral at Reims was the church in which numerous French monarchs were officially crowned. Reims is one of the later Gothic cathedrals and renowned for its height. There is a fine interior west facade with carvings of Biblical scenes; some fine 13c stained glass in the high windows of the nave and choir; and windows by Marc Chagall (in the eastern chapel) and the two local artists Jacques and Brigitte Simon. The south transept window by Jacques Simon shows themes linked with champagne including a portrait of the monk who invented it, Dom Perignon

Saint-Malo, Brittany, France. The History, World War II, Pirates, Present Value and Tourism. The enthralling mast-filled port town of St-Malo is a dramatic sight. With one of the world's greatest tidal ranges, brewing storms under blackened skies see waves lash the top of the ramparts ringing its beautiful walled city. Hours later, the blue sky merges with the deep cobalt sea as the tide recedes, exposing broad beaches and creating land bridges to granite outcrop islands. Construction of the walled city's fortifications began in the 12th century. The town became a key port during the 17th and 18th centuries as a base for both merchant ships and government-sanctioned privateers (pirates, basically) against the constant threat of the English. These days, English arrivals are tourists, for whom St-Malo, a short ferry hop from the Channel Islands, is a summer haven. The pretty fishing port of St-Servan sits 2km south of the walled city and many sights are located there.

San Gimignano, Italy. As you crest the nearby hills, the 14 towers of the walled town of San Gimignano rise up like a medieval Manhattan. Originally an Etruscan village, the settlement was named after the bishop of Modena, San Gimignano, who is said to have saved the city from Attila the Hun. It became a comune (local government) in 1199, prospering in part because of its location on the Via Francigena. Building a tower taller than their neighbours' (there were originally 72) became a popular way for prominent families to flaunt their power and wealth. In 1348 plague wiped out much of the population and weakened the local economy, leading to the town's submission to Florence in 1353. Today, not even the plague would deter the swarms of summer day trippers, who are lured by a palpable sense of history, intact medieval streetscapes and enchanting rural setting. Midway down the Italian peninsula, Tuscany (Toscana in Italian) is distinguished by rolling hills, snowcapped mountains, dramatic cypress trees, and miles of coastline on the Tyrrhenian Sea which all adds up to gorgeous views at practically every turn. The beauty of the landscape proves a perfect foil for the region's abundance of superlative art and architecture. It also produces some of Italy's finest wines and olive oils. The combination of unforgettable art, sumptuous landscapes, and eminently drinkable wines that pair beautifully with its simple food makes a trip to Tuscany something beyond special. Many of Tuscany's cities and towns have retained the same fundamental character over the past 500 years. Civic rivalries that led to bloody battles centuries ago have given way to soccer rivalries. Renaissance pomp lives on in the celebration of local feast days and centuries-old traditions such as the Palio in Siena and the Giostra del Saracino (Joust of the Saracen) in Arezzo. Often, present-day Tuscans look as though they might have served as models for paintings produced hundreds of years ago. In many ways, the Renaissance lives on in Tuscany.

San Juan Islands, Washington USA. Travel and Tourism. The waters of the Pacific Northwest's Salish Sea, between mainland Washington and Vancouver Island, contain hundreds of islands, some little more than rocky reefs, others rising to nearly 2,500 feet. Among these, the San Juans are considered by many to be the loveliest. About 100 miles northwest of Seattle, these romantic islands abound with breathtaking rolling pastures, rocky shorelines, and thickly forested ridges, and their quaint villages draw art lovers, foodies, and city folk seeking serenity. Inns are easygoing and well-appointed, and many restaurants are helmed by highly talented chefs emphasizing local ingredients. Each of the San Juans maintains a distinct character, though all share in the archipelago's blessings of serene farmlands, unspoiled coves, blue-green or gray tidal waters, and radiant light. Offshore, seals haul out on sandbanks and orcas patrol the deep channels. You may see the occasional minke whale frolicking in the kelp, and humpback whales have become increasingly visible around the islands. You'll very rarely spy gray whales, which stick closer Washington's mainland. There are 172 named islands in the archipelago. Sixty are populated (though most have only a house or two), and 10 are state marine parks, some of which are accessible only to nonmotorized craft kayakers, canoes, small sailboats-navigating the Cascadia Marine Trail. The San Juan Islands have valleys and mountains where eagles soar, and forests and leafy glens where the small island deer browse. Even a species of prickly pear cactus (Opuntia fragilis) grows here. Beaches can be of sand or shingle (covered in small pebbles). The islands are home to ducks and swans, herons and hawks, otters and whales. The main draw is the great outdoors, but there's plenty to do once you've seen the whales or hiked. Each island, even tiny Lopez, has at least one commercial center, where you'll find shops, restaurants, and history museums. Not surprisingly, many artists take inspiration from the dramatic surroundings, and each island has a collection of galleries; Friday Harbor even has an impressive sculpture park and art museum. Lavender and alpaca farms, spas and yoga studios, a whale museum and lighthouse tours the San Juans have a little bit of everything.

Development here is strictly controlled, there are no high-rise buildings and most of the islands are preserved in a natural state, making them ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle. The two islands, connected by a bridge and joined occasionally at low tide, are home to a number of small communities with a selection of restaurants, galleries and shops and even a local theatre.
