The message of modern physics is that physical reality has, at its frontiers, all the aspects of a transcendent order. At the foundation of things, elementary particles can exert instantaneous long-distance influences on each other, can be meaningfully said to have mind-like properties, and can exist in states which are, as Heisenberg wrote, “not quite real, but between the idea of a thing and a real thing.” Thus, just as dead atoms form living organisms and stupid molecules form intelligent brains, metaphysical entities form physical reality. This remarkable book clearly explains the concepts of quantum physics in order to show how science and spirituality are not separate.

Schäfer gives a concise overview of the static equilibrium properties of polymer solutions. In the first part diagrammatic perturbation theory is derived from scratch. The second part illustrates the basic ideas of the renormalization group (RG). The crucial role of dilation invariance is stressed. The more efficient method of dimensional regularization and minimal subtractions is worked out in part three. The fourth part contains a unified evaluation of the theory to the one loop level. All the important experimental quantities are discussed in detail, and the results are compared extensively to experiment. Empirical methods of data analysis are critically discussed. The final (fifth) part is devoted to extensions of theory. The first three parts of this book may serve as the basis of a course. Parts four and five are hoped to be useful for detailed quantitative evaluations of experiments.

Sind Transzendenz und moderne Naturwissenschaft unvereinbar? Ganz im Gegenteil, meint Lothar Schäfer: Die Quantenphysik hat uns die Transzendenz zurückgegeben und inspiriert uns dazu, die Welt ganz neu zu verstehen. Hinter der materiellen Welt steht dann eine versteckte, spirituelle Wirklichkeit; wenn wir beide in Harmonie bringen, erhält unser Leben einen Sinn. Physik und Transzendenz bilden somit keinen Widerspruch, sondern eine untrennbare Einheit. Naturwissenschaft und Spiritualität sind kein Gegensatz! In seinem Buch "Versteckte Wirklichkeit. Wie uns die Quantenphysik zur Transzendenz führt" versucht Professor Schäfer von den Phänomenen der Quantenphysik auf das Wirken eines göttlichen Bewusstseins im Kosmos zurückzuschließen. Obwohl ich als Theologe Hemmungen habe, solche Schlüsse zu akzeptieren, weil man von der Physik nicht direkt zu Gott kommen kann, finde ich dieses doch ein durchaus anregendes Buch.
