M.C. Gardner's Whitman & Gardner's Witness to War is a blending of word and image from a poet and photographer whose work was precipitated out of the American Civil War. The book is 379 pages long. It contains all of the Drum-Taps & Sequel poems with a special analysis of "When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom'd" and its relationship and influence on T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land". Also featured are Alexander Gardner's photo-plates of the battles of Antietam & Gettysburg and his Lincoln Portraits and his photographs of the execution of the assassination conspirators.

Pursuing historical and textural hints, Gardner investigates the influence of Whitman's "Sex Poems" and erotic sensibility on the imagination of Bram Stoker and his signature creation, Count Dracula.

The first in a series of commentaries on the major poetry of Walt Whitman. The book specifically cites Heidegger's Sein und Zeit in its title for the ontological concerns that both thinkers share.
