Earth is the superheated, abandoned home of ancient humanity, a humanity where men and women lived, loved, struggled, and failed. Lyla is the home of descendants of those primitive ones, descendants who have molded humanity into a glory beyond any ancient dream, a humanity of beauty and wisdom, of grace and knowledge, of curiosity and deep friendships, and where the male of the species is gone, unneeded, and remembered mainly as a blight on the past and a potential hindrance to a far greater future. But is this true? Could the great achievements of humanity be in vain? In this future world we are introduced to Sybl, Kaylon and others who are called Children of the Goddess, and we visit their wondrous sanctuaries and revel in their beauty, loving care, and deep wisdom. We are also made aware of their ancient foe, the Order of the Light and watch the reopening of the conflict held in abeyance for centuries and destined to challenge the idea of what humanity is, what it should be, and where it is going.

In the ruins of the Roman city of Sepphoris in Galilee archeologists found a fourth century Aramaic scroll the first portion of which had been photographed and given to Sonja Bracken, a textual scholar and expert on Semitic languages. From that beginning she began a quest to find the entire scroll, to translate it, and to deal with the outrage of those who didn't want anyone or anything to tamper with the traditions of Western Culture.
