Her mother named her Elizabeth, but she was usually called Betty. Since she was the youngest of her mother's four children, her maternal relatives referred to her as Baby Beth. This was a moniker that she disdained but tolerated most of her young life.Unwanted before even being born, Betty goes through life feeling rejected by just about everybody in her family. Living in poverty, nobody at school wanted to befriend her either, so she walked aimlessly through her boring existence. This book continues with a character found in Luke Faces the Truth. Macie lives a vicarious lifestyle before losing her young son to a congenital heart defect. Never being much of a mother, when she finds his Christmas gift sitting on her kitchen table, she realizes that she must change her careless ways or sink into a pit of depression from which none can draw her out.
