Serpentine Pavilion 2025: A Capsule in Time by Marina Tabassum Since its launch in 2000, London’s annual Serpentine Pavilion has become one of the most anticipated events in the global cultural calendar, and a leading visitor attraction during London’s summer season of culture. Each year, an internationally known architect is invited to design and create their first built structure in England: the Serpentine Pavilion. https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/serpentine-pavilion-2025-by-marina-tabassum/ Marina Tabassum (b. 1969, Dhaka, Bangladesh) is an acclaimed architect and educator. Her architectural practice, Marina Tabassum Architects, remains consciously contained in size — prioritising climate, context, culture and history — undertaking a limited number of projects per year. Tabassum is a Professor at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. She held the Norman Foster Chair at Yale University in 2023 and has taught as a visiting professor at numerous universities. Tabassum’s pursuit for the ‘architecture of relevance’ has won her numerous awards including the Soane Medal from the UK; Arnold Brunner Memorial Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters; the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture; and the Jameel Prize from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 2024, Tabassum was included in TIME Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People’. This volume presents various building projects that Marina Tabassum has worked on since 1995. The book ranges from early projects in the city of Dhaka such as the Museum of Independence and the celebrated Bait Ur Rouf Mosque, to recent mobile modular structures called Khudi Bari. Tabassum is establishing the latter for the people affected by displacement in various geographically and climatically challenged locations--both in the Ganges Delta and in the Rohingya refugee camp at Cox's Bazar on the border with Myanmar, which is currently the largest refugee camp in the world. With contributions by Sean Anderson, Vera Simone Bader, Kareem Ibrahim, Hanif Kara, Andres Lepik, Nondita Correa Mehrotra, Tanzil Shafique, Sarah M. Whiting, and Danny Wicaksono.

Distinguished Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum is the fourth recipient of the Soane Medal, which is awarded annually in recognition of architects and critics who have made a major contribution to their field through practice, education, history or theory, and in doing so have furthered and enriched the public understanding of architecture. In this speech, Marina Tabassum reflects on her childhood, training, and the ways in which growing up in newly independent Bangladesh has had a profound influence on her work. From her Bait ur Rouf Mosque to Dhaka's independence Monument, Tabassum has created buildings which bring communities together and foster a distinct sense of place. Her research into dwelling in the Ganges Delta and Bengali courtyards suggest alternative models of building, habitation, and ownership which have the potential to inform architectural practice more widely. All her work is underpinned by a focus on sustainability and Tabassum is truly leading the conversation about the ways in which architecture, people and planet interact. She outlines her approach to creating an "architecture of relevance", resisting the temptations of the commercial in order to create buildings which improve the lives of those who use them. Tabassum's accounts of her most significant projects give reader an intimate glimpse of the path she followed in becoming an internationally celebrated architect.

In response, Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum and her team have developed the Khudi Bari – Little House: A low-cost structure that can be assembled, disassembled, transported, and reassembled in another location by the in-habitants themselves. A Khudi Bari has been erected on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein as an example of an architec-tural approach and a concrete response to problems exac-erbated by the climate crisis. This accompanying publication contains texts, photographs and illustrations of the building, which forms an important part of the ongoing architectural dialogue on the campus.

SIR JOHN SOANE'S MUSEUM

Grafton’s recently completed Marshall Building for LSE, sits across Lincoln’s Inn Fields from Sir John Soane’s Museum, the home of leading Georgian architect John Soane. This new neighbour was deeply inspired by the architecture of the Museum, in particular Soane’s atmospheric use of light, as well as other historic buildings in the area. The result is an elegant, expressive and democratic new space. Like the Museum, it fosters learning, debate and creativity. This relationship will be celebrated in an exhibition at Sir John Soane’s Museum from October 2022-January 2023. Contributing authors explore the architecture of Grafton’s Marshall Building and the Soane Museum, pairing Soane drawings from the Museum’s collection with Grafton’s own drawings and in-progress photographs of the Marshall Building which are published for the first time. This approach highlights architecture as a craft shared across the centuries. This innovative publication also functions as a sketch-book, with printed sections interleaved with 16 pages of high-quality drawing paper and a pocket at the back for collected materials.

Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2019 The Aga Khan Award for Architecture is one of the most prestigious and renowned awards for architecture worldwide. Since 1980 the Award has been given every three years to projects that combine social and ecological aspects and translate them into innovative and exemplary design. The Award seeks to identify and encourage building concepts that successfully address the needs and aspirations of societies across the world, in which Muslims have a significant presence. This publication presents the shortlist of the 2017–2019 award cycle. From a group of almost 400, 20 projects have been shortlisted by the Master Jury and evaluated by an expert group of technical reviewers. Some of these projects have been honoured with the Aga Khan Award. In addition to detailed descriptions of all projects, this book gathers a series of personal statements from the members of the Steering Committee and the Award’s Master Jury on key issues that were crucial in the discussions for the final selection and assignment of the award recipients. Assembled together, this book presents a selection of the outstanding examples of sustainable and socially relevant architecture in the world today and opens up fundamental perspectives for the planning of the future.
