This addition to the "Britain in Old Photographs" series brings together a collection of black-and-white pictures spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Drawn from family albums, local collections and professional photographers, they show the way things were and how they have changed. Every photograph is captioned, providing names and dates where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail and giving life to the scenes and personalities captured through the camera lens. Bringing together all aspects of daily life - celebrations and disasters, work and leisure, people and buildings - the collection should inspire memories, as well as serve as an introduction to visitors.
The British government's top secret Code & Cypher School at Bletchley Park, otherwise known as Station X, was the unlikely setting for one of the most vital undercover operations of the Second World War. It was at Bletchley in present-day Milton Keynes that teams of code breakers succeeded in cracking Germany's supposedly unbreakable Enigma codes, thereby shortening the war by at least two years. Marion Hill has used the transcripts of some 200 interviews and memoirs from among the thousands of people who worked at Station X to give a remarkable insight into the daily lives of the civilian and service personnel who contributed to the breaking of the Enigma and other Axis codes. She explores their recruitment and training, their first impressions on arrival at Bletchley Park ('BP'), their working conditions, (including the in-house food and entertainment), and their time off in billets and beyond. These BP workers, from boffins to debs to ex-bank clerks and engineers, were united in the need to 'keep mum' - even with their family and close friends. However, the stressful burden on secrecy created divisions within the organisation, and illnesses; and many felt disappointed at the lack of acknowledgement for a vital job about which they were forbidden to speak until many years later.A selection of archive photographs and illustrations accompanies the text, drawn from the Bletchley Park Trust Archive and from the personal albums of those stationed at Bletchley.
People living in the Milton Keynes area forty years ago came under the auspices of three towns, thirteen villages and a country council. Many changes have taken place in this time and it is the people, whose experiences and reminiscences are recorded here, who have shaped the area into the remarkable city it is today.'Wives did not work. Their job was to stay at home, keep it clean and tidy, look after the children and make sure there was a cooked meal on the table when the husband got home from work. There was no such thing as microwaves and washing machines. If you were lucky you had a Goblin vacuum cleaner. All the meals were cooked with fresh vegetables and the pies were home made.'All contributions come from the oral archives kept at the Living Archive of Milton Keynes which has been collecting reminiscences from city residents since 1975, and are complemented by 100 photographs from their collection.
Intersected by an ancient brook, Roman tracks, the eighteenth-century Grand Union Canal, the nineteenth-century London-Birmingham railway and a twentieth-century grid-road system, Bradwell has seen its fair share of change over the years, but its past and present remain inextricably intertwined. In this vivid full-colour book, Marion Hill’s collection of archive and modern photographs alongside her many fascinating stories chart the history of the town, from Roman settlers, to a disused railway line now threading a modern route as a cycle path. Bradwell Then & Now will surely prove irresistible for anyone who values the unique heritage of this historic place.

Ciscoe's Dance will transport you to the fictional world of Kammbia, where a new adventure is about to begin. The latest novel from popular author Marion Hill is an escape into an alternate universe, one in which magic can indeed happen. Professional dancers Ciscoe and Latisha Maldonado have been happily married for 16 years. During that time, they have earned a good living performing at the finest nightclubs in Walter's Grove's famous Roxie & Penelope District. Performing traditional dances to the city's treasured Guanamamma music, they're the opening act for the evening, readying partygoers for an evening out on the town. All goes well until Piccanta music, the latest trend, springs onto the scene. A modern style of music with its own style of dancing, Piccanta music threatens to eclipse the old ways - and with them, the traditional Guanamamma dancers and musicians. Crowds at Ciscoe and Latisha's performances dwindle as people flock to Piccanta clubs. But certainly, Ciscoe and Latisha thought, the Festival of Josette will remain true to its roots and include Guanamamma performers among its featured acts. After all, the festival has been a Walter's Grove tradition for years. Why wouldn't the year's major festival include performances of the city's cultural treasure? The festival's organizers thought otherwise. When Ciscoe and Latisha heard that their act had been dropped from the festival lineup, their hopes were dashed. It seemed as if their world was coming to an end. Where could they perform? Will they - and their beloved Guanamamma music - become a relic of the past? And worse, will this treasured tradition be lost forever to the people of Walter's Grove? Then, intrigue enters the picture. Ciscoe will learn that his past impacts his future. A woman's scorn cuts deeper than he could have imagined. How will this affect his marriage? And will this woman's bitterness devastate his career? But then, a connection from a new group holds out promise. Will this group coalesce into a fan base that will give traditional Guanamamma dancing and music a new birth in the city of its origin? And, to Ciscoe's surprise, once-hidden family ties will reveal themselves from a connection he has known for a long time. Ciscoe's Dance celebrates the symbiotic connection between music and dance and how it created a city. As the first book of Hill's Dance & Listen series, this novel carries with it the promise of more adventures to come.
To James Madison Davis, my great great grandfather, born in Alabama in 1835, I dedicate this family photo project. James M. Davis is a person I never knew, but of whom I've heard much, and through documentation have pieced together some details of his life. What is most remarkable is the fact that though born enslaved, he apparently always had dreams for freedom, for the acquisition of land, to be the support of his family, and to educate his children. He stole himself away from his slave owner at sometime between 1862 and 1863, and from oral accounts given by his children and his statement to the 1910 census takers, he joined the (UA) Union Army. Thank you great, great grandfather James Madison Davis for your fortitude, your faith, and your persistence in pursuing your dream.
