Harry Lester, a private detective in Wilmington, NC, is hired by the wife of a close friend to find a missing briefcase containing $200,000. The girl he is investigating turns up dead in the morgue. Then others are found killed all around town and soon the monster/ogress, a former actress and master of disguise, is coming for him as well.

These stories are about people I have known and experiences I have had. They are fiction, but not untrue. "Shorty's Prayer" is about a wicked hillbilly minister's unrequited love for a beautiful married woman, set in the mountains of western North Carolina, at a family reunion. "The Noise of the Rain" is about a detective trying to solve a series of murders. "Tobias" is science fiction, about resurrection. "Sweetpea's Best Christmas" is about how my wife and I were found by a cat. We hope you will be surprised and get a little joy out of every one

Midwinter now has a new look with a new cover, 2017. It was originally published in 2008. It is based on a true crime which happened near Christmas time, 1831. Everyone thought beautiful Frankie Silver and her husband, Charlie, were a handsome match. When the young couple married, it was the social event of the season. Then a set of footprints leading from the Silver cabin to the nearby barn ended with the discovery of Charlie Silver's dismembered body, and Frankie was the only suspect. Her trial would end in a hanging. Buckhorn Tavern Christmas 1861, published in 2017, is a monologue told by Patricia Young who worked at the Buckhorn Tavern where Charlie spent a lot of time. It is based on Midwinter.
