Michael Owen reveals the highlights and pitfalls of being a professional footballer in his first official autobiography, which contains his personal reflections on eight years in the game, including two World Cups, two European Championships and goalscoring records for club and country. Updated to include his first full season with Real Madrid. After his famous goal against Argentina in France ‘98, Michael Owen was forced to grow up almost overnight, his sudden fame propelling him to stardom to the extent that the hopes of a football nation now rest on the slender frame of this 26-year-old. In his autobiography, Owen is forthright in his views on the game: he reacts to the accusations of diving, his susceptibility to injury, and his alleged gambling addiction; he writes candidly about his career at Liverpool, from Roy Evans to Gerard Houllier, and the reasons behind him leaving the club that made him as a player; and he talks about his ambitions for the England team and his new club Newcastle. He is also opinionated about his England striking partnership with Wayne Rooney and the threat from Jermaine Defoe; his complex and at times difficult relationship with coaches such as Glenn Hoddle, Kevin Keegan and Sven-Goran Eriksson; and he has strong views on the thug culture still rife in English football. Outside of the game, he talks openly for the first time about the death threats to him and his family, his relationship with childhood sweetheart Louise Bonsall – including her serious injury from a riding accident – and their baby Gemma as well as his passion for horse racing and betting. Exclusive to this paperback edition, there are two new chapters covering Owen’s dramatic transfer to Real Madrid, the frustrations of his first season in La Liga and the reasons for his return to England. The book will also expose the inside story of England’s 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Henry Thweatt Owen fought the War of 1861-1865 on many fronts. As a commander of Company C, 18th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Army of Northern Virginia, Confederate States of America, he fought against the Union Army. He also fought on a second front in frequent battles concerning the welfare of his men with the commander of the 18th, Colonel Robert Enoch Withers. As a husband, he fought to keep his wife's spirits up while she endured the many hardships of running a homestead during the war. After the war he fought many battles against political corruption in Virginia. He corresponded with many survivors of the war, including Gen. James Longstreet and Major Charles Pickett, before writing several newspaper articles. Henry T. Owen's story is told predominantly in his own words, but his experiences were common to thousands of men-both Confederate and Union-who held high standards of conduct and principles in their lives. This book is not intended to be a tribute solely to Henry T. Owen. It is a tribute to both Confederate and Union soldiers and sailors, and to the wives, children and other loved ones they left behind. Following the war, thousands of young men, like Henry T. Owen, returned to their homes to try and put together the broken pieces of their lives and to heal the nation's wounds. It was not an easy task. Many of the letters, documents, and other material published in this book are transcribed from the Henry T. Owen Papers, 1822-1929 archived at the Library of Virginia. Additional material was transcribed from Henry Owen's scrapbook now owned by one of the authors. A chronological list of names in letters, and an alphabetical list of names in letters augment this work.

THE MAYA BOOK OF LIFE: UNDERSTANDING THE XULTUN TAROT explores the archetypes and alchemy of the major arcana of the Xultun Tarot through indigenous teachings and the analytical psychology of C G Jung. The Xultun Tarot was created by Peter Balin in 1976 based on images from Maya history and culture. It is the only tarot deck where the major arcana form a complete picture. This picture is not only a symbolic image of the alchemical marriage of spirit and matter but also a map of what Jung called the individuation process. The Maya Book of Life is the companion book to the Kahurangi Press (xultun.com) reprinting of the original edition of the Xultun Tarot in its original size and vibrant colours. Michael Owen is a clinical psychologist in private practice and author of Jung and the Native American Moon Cycles. He lives in New Zealand.

The Pulitzer Prize–winning American lyricist Ira Gershwin (1896–1983) has been hailed as one of the masters of the Great American Songbook—songs written largely for Broadway and Hollywood from the 1920s to the 1950s. Now, in the first full-length biography devoted to his life, Ira Gershwin steps out at last from the long shadow cast by his younger and more famous brother George. It’s a life with a sharp dividing line; we witness Ira’s transformation by George’s death at thirty-eight. From carefree dreamer and successful lyricist, he becomes guardian of his brother’s legacy and manager of complex family dynamics, even while continuing to practise his craft with composers like Harold Arlen and Jerome Kern. Drawing on extensive archival sources and often using Ira’s own words, Michael Owen offers a rich portrait of the modest man who penned the words to many of America’s best-loved songs.

Terra Mortis: The Death of the Earth - A Jungian and Indigenous View
Terra Mortis: Part II continues Michael Owen's reflections on the mortality of the Earth. Much has been written about the threat to civilisation from climate change. However, the collective recoils from thinking the unthinkable-that this planet may be dying. But to think the unthinkable allows what does not have a home to find a home. It in habits it with human consciousness. Then it may not happen the same way as it might have done. Perhaps. We have run out of planet-a never-before-seen thing. A whole 1.7 planet's worth. Her bones have been mined. The rocks can no longer breathe. Her waters can no longer dream. Her skin is scabrous with parking lots. And the Great Barrier Reef is dying. The trees have nearly given up. The animals have done what they can. The Titanic, 9/11, the GFC and Covid have tried their best to warn us of our grandiosity. Monotheism has abandoned the earth for heavenly rewards. Pathological optimism keeps us in an ecological coma. Indigenous peoples are now only 5% of the world's population. Half of the world lives in cities. And our relationship with indigenous beauty has been lost. Part 1. Shadow: Monotheism has abandoned the earth for heavenly rewards. God's shadow is the narcissistic aberration that is the contrary to indigenous consciousness. The god of monotheism (God, Allah and Yahweh) in all its forms, origins and offspring, is directly and indirectly responsible for the destruction of the Earth. Part 2. Matter: All matter has consciousness. Vernon Masayesva, Hopi elder, said "We believe that water has memory. It responds to human behaviour." Part 3. Body: The health of the Earth and the health of our bodies are one. When the memory of the rocks and the trees and the animals is lost then human memory is also lost. Part 4. Disorder: Pre-traumatic Stress Disorder (yes, you read that right), depression, despair, and the pathology of hope. It is what will happen in the future that is traumatic. There will be flash-forwards as well as flash-backs. Part 5. Science: The rise of scientism and our planetary illness. So what's my beef with CBT? Because behaviourism and its cuzzie-bros are the psychological version of colonisation. Part 6. Earth and Self: The mirrors of the Earth (the original Self) and Jung's "God-image within". The suggestion that the Earth is dying is felt as an attack on the Self and disturbs the relationship with whatever external object the Self is projected onto (religion, atheism, motherhood, the First Amendment, sports hero, or saving the planet). Part 7. Apocalypse anytime: Some far-fetched but aspirational remedies. Ask the Earth for help. What if as many people said prayers to the Earth as they do to God-Allah-Yahweh? What if Sunday morning services at the church, Friday evening prayers at shul, and Friday midday prayers at the mosque, were just for the Earth. Not to God for the Earth--but to the Earth. All with the help of C G Jung and indigenous wisdom.

It has been said that the records of singer and actress Julie London were purchased for their provocative, full-color cover photographs as frequently as they were for the music contained in their grooves. During the 1950s and ’60s, her piercing blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair, and shapely figure were used to sell the world an image of cool sexuality. The contrast between image and reality, the public and the private, is at the heart of Julie London’s story. Through years of research; extensive interviews with family, friends, and musical associates; and access to rarely seen or heard archival material, author Michael Owen reveals the impact of her image on the direction of her career and how it influenced the choices she made, including the ultimate decision to walk away from performing. Go Slow follows Julie London’s life and career through its many stages: her transformation from 1940s movie starlet to coolly defiant singer of the classic torch ballad “Cry Me a River” of the ’50s, and her journey from Las Vegas hotel entertainer during the rock ’n’ roll revolution of the ’60s to the no-nonsense nurse of the ’70s hit television series Emergency!
