LOTH - Let off the Hook. Persons guilty of heinous crimes that have got away with it. Now someone is rubbing them out. Sheriff Ken Ripton of the Ruskin County Sheriff's Office investigates.

The over-zealous mayor of Rapid City, Alexander Griffith, accidentally kills the wife of the town's sherrif, Aaron Dooley, in an attempt to stop a petty thief. After corrupting witnesses, Griffith is cleared of manslaughter charges but the whole town is outraged. After the killing of the two bribed testifiers and an attempt on his own life, Griffith flees, never to be seen again at Rapid City. But Sherrif Dooley knows that sooner or later he's "got to go find that man". In the meantime he has another problem. In a nearby extinct volcano, once the site of a prosperous sulphur mining operation, tens of bodies of Mexican workers are found in hidden mass graves. Dooley investigates. Only trouble is, that sulphur operation was owned and run by three of the biggest guns in South Dakota; Matthew King, rancher, Paul Fontal, State Governor, and Jeremiah Johnson, entrepreneur with several on-going activities throughout SD, everything from construction to banking and, it is whispered, prostitution.

All'et di diciotto anni, Frank fece parte di una banda coinvolta nella rapina di un convoglio trenato dai muli che stava trasferendo una partita d'oro fuso dalle miniere di Cedar Creek alla banca. Prima che la rapina fosse portata a termine una soffiata caus l'arresto di tutta la banda, con l'eccezione di Frank che stava nel bosco a tenere le redini dei cavalli degli altri. Tre barre d'oro per erano gi state messe nelle bisacce. Frank le port a casa e le nascose. Tre giorni dopo, anche lui venne arrestato e, come gli altri quattro elementi della banda, condannato a quindici anni nel penitenziario di La Junta. Adesso libero, e il tempo di recupero per tutti quegli anni passati dietro le sbarre arrivato...

Il troppo infervorato sindaco di Rapid City, Alexander Griffith, uccide per sbaglio la moglie dello sceriffo della citt , mentre Griffith cerca di fermare un ladruncolo. Dopo aver subornato due testimoni, Griffith prosciolto dall'accusa di omicidio colposo, ma la citt ne indignata. Dopo l'uccisione di uno dei due testimoni e un attentato alla vita dello stesso Griffith, il sindaco fugge e non sar mai pi visto a Rapid City. Ma lo sceriffo, Aaron Dooley, sa che alla fine dovr "andare a cercare quell'uomo".
