This book marks the major exhibition David Nash at Kew Gardens opening in June 2012 through to April 2013. One of the UK’s most prolific creators of ecological art, David Nash will produce and exhibit his work across the Gardens, with sculptures, installations, drawings and film in place throughout the Gardens, glasshouses, and exhibition spaces. Nash will work at Kew on a ‘wood quarry’ from April 2012, creating new pieces for the exhibition using trees from the Gardens that have come to the end of their natural life, and this ongoing work will form part of the exhibition. In a career spanning 40 years, Nash has created over 2,000 sculptures out of wood, many of them monumental in scale. These sculptures are sometimes carved using a chainsaw or axe, or partially burned to produce a charred surface. Through his work, he has gained a deep understanding of the properties of trees and the artistic process itself is, for Nash, deeply collaborative – between the artist, his material, and the natural world. Extensively illustrated, this book will give a unique insight into Nash’s’ art and life, and encourage readers to engage with the sculptures and their relation to nature, and the beautiful setting of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

Kew’s Grade 1 listed Temperate House is the world’s largest surviving Victorian glasshouse and the reopening in May 2018 will mark its 155th anniversary. The Temperate House has been closed for the past five years for a major restoration project, which has involved repairs to the entire framework and ventilation system, brickwork and statuary, as well as an overhaul of the planting and the inclusion of some of the world’s rarest plants. It is home to Kew’s temperate zone plants, containing specimens from South Africa, Central and South America, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and oceanic islands. Many of its best known species, such as its tree ferns, have been in Kew’s collection since the glasshouse first opened, or even longer. This book is a souvenir of the history of the Temperate House, and details the changes that have occurred in its 155 years, all accompanied with fascinating archival photographs and botanical illustrations. Central to the book is a pull out double page section detailing the new planting and layout of the House.

Excerpts from her personal correspondence and passages from her published autobiography combine to produce a vivid first-person account revealing her interests, opinions and experiences, along with all the pleasures and frustrations of prolonged overseas travel. Richly illustrated with facsimiles of letters and pen sketches she sent to friends, and reproductions of her celebrated oil paintings. The book relays pertinent details about North’s life and considers her varied attitudes towards the people she met and the places she visited, including what her writings and paintings may suggest about her attitudes to empire and colonialism. A final chapter will cover her English homes, particularly her London flat, which she felt was ‘more like home than any other’.
