Through unexpected twists and supernatural interventions, the narrative explores themes of resilience and divine providence, emphasizing how belief and unity can overcome adversity. The stories are filled with vivid imagery and folkloric influences that bring historical and mythical elements to life. This collection offers a window into a world where the ordinary and the mystical coexist, creating an artistic portrayal of human endurance, imagination, and faith. Each tale serves as a testament to the power of storytelling as both cultural preservation and emotional reflection.

"T r k Vil g Magyarorsz gon," now englished for the first time, is a sequel to "Az Erd ly arany kora," already published by Messrs. Jarrold, under the title of "'Midst the Wild Carpathians." The two tales, though quite distinct, form together one great historical romance, which centres round the weakly, good-natured Michael Apafi, the last independent Prince of Transylvania, his masterful and virtuous consort, Anna Bornemissza, and his machiavellian Minister, Michael Teleki, a sort of pocket-Richelieu, whose genius might have made a great and strong state greater and stronger still, but could not save a little state, already doomed to destruction as much from its geographical position as from its inherent weakness.
Wherein is shown how sagely the Rev. Master Fr hlich brought up his motherless daughter, pretty Michal. In the days when the Turkish Sultan ruled in Hungary as far as Ersekujvar and Eger, the German Kaiser from Eger to the Zips country, and George Rakoczy, Prince of Transylvania, from Zips to the Szeklerland-all three of whom were perpetually fighting among themselves, sometimes two against one and sometimes all together indiscriminately, so that the inhabitants had a very lively time of it-in those days (somewhere about 1650) the learned and reverend Master David Fr hlich was the pride of the Keszm r Lyceum and Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy there. Master Fr hlich knew everything which could be reasonably expected of a man. He knew how to calculate solar and lunar eclipses.
