It is intended to provide an overview of PKI functions and their applications. NIST SP 800-60 August 2008 This guideline has been developed to assist Federal government agencies to categorize information and information systems. The guideline's objective is to facilitate application of appropriate levels of information security according to a range of levels of impact or consequences that might result from the unauthorized disclosure, modification, or use of the information or information system. This document includes two volumes, a basic guideline and a volume of appendices. Users should review the guidelines provided in Volume I, then refer to only that specific material from the appendices that applies to their own systems and applications. The provisional impact assignments are provided in Volume II, Appendix C and D. NIST SP 800-115 September 2008 An information security assessment is the process of determining how effectively an entity being assessed (e.g., host, system, network, procedure, person-known as the assessment object) meets specific security objectives. Three types of assessment methods can be used to accomplish this-testing, examination, and interviewing. Testing is the process of exercising one or more assessment objects under specified conditions to compare actual and expected behaviors. Examination is the process of checking, inspecting, reviewing, observing, studying, or analyzing one or more assessment objects to facilitate understanding, achieve clarification, or obtain evidence. Interviewing is the process of conducting discussions with individuals or groups within an organization to facilitate understanding, achieve clarification, or identify the location of evidence.
