Novalis: Fichte Studies

Novalis: Fichte Studies

Novalis

Cambridge University Press
2003
sidottu
This volume presents the first complete translation of Fichte Studies, a powerful, creative and sustained critique of Fichtean philosophy by the young philosopher-poet Friedrich von Hardenberg, who under the pen-name Novalis went on to become the most well-known and beloved of the early German Romantic writers. Anyone interested in the fate of German philosophy and literature immediately after Kant will find this collection of notes and aphorisms a treasure-trove of original contributions on the nature of self-consciousness, the relation of art to philosophy, and the nature of philosophical inquiry. There are also the beginnings of a strikingly contemporary-sounding semiotic theory. The text is translated by Jane Kneller, who also provides an introduction situating the Fichte Studies in the context of Novalis' life and work.

NOVALIS: HYMNS TO THE NIGHT AND SPIRITUAL SONGS Translated by George MacDonald Edited and introduced by Carol Appleby LARGE PRINT EDITION A new edition in large print of Novalis' Hymns To the Night, and Spiritual Songs, translated by George MacDonald, with an introduction and notes by Carol Appleby. Includes the German text. Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772-1801) is the most mystical of the German Romantic poets. He is at once the most typical and the most unusual of the German Romantic writers, indeed, of all Romantic poets. His best known work, Hymns To the Night, was published in 1800. Novalis is supremely idealistic, far more so than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe or Heinrich Heine. He died young, which makes him, like Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, something of a hero (or martyr). He did not write as much as Shelley, but his work, like that of Keats or Arthur Rimbaud, promised much. For Michael Hamburger, Novalis' poetry is almost totally idealistic. The translator of Hymns To the Night, Scottish fantasist George MacDonald (1824-95), included Lewis Carroll and John Ruskin among his literary friends. His well-known works were Phantastes (1858), Lilith (1895), Bannerman's Boyhood and the Curdie children's stories: The Princess and the Goblin (1872) and The Princess and Curdie (1882). MacDonald's books were a significant influence on both J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Illustrated. Large print on cream paper. With bibliography and notes. 276 pages. www.crmoon.com

Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg) did not live long on the earth, but lived long enough to leave his mark on great writers and thinkers such as George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis. Though unfinished at his death, his novel, "Heinrich von Ofterdingen," with its resplendent blue flower, left an enduring mark in the imaginations of many writers of fantasy and 'romance.' The 'blue flower' signifies the deep unsatisfaction that humanity has with its own lot, its striving for the fulfillment which can only come through an encounter with the transcendent, which seems always to be just out of reach. Just out of reach, yes, but real, nonetheless.
