HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. Meet the greatest entertainer of the 19th Century… In 1834, desperate to create a better life for his family, small-time Connecticut businessman P. T. Barnum moved to New York City. With true entrepreneurial spirit and against all odds, he wowed audiences with his ensemble of musical spectacles, attractions and variety shows – often exploiting the vulnerable for entertainment value. A master showman, his crowning achievement was the world-famous circus, Barnum & Bailey’s Greatest Show on Earth. In this account of his life and work, written by the man himself and first published in 1855, P. T. Barnum creates an aura of excitement about himself and his enduring fame, confirming his reputation as the greatest impresario of all time and revealing the controversial decisions that helped him to his fortune.
Struggles and Triumphs -- Sixty Years' Recollections of P. T. Barnum: Including his Golden Rules for Money-Making
"... my case was actual capital to certain preachers and religious editors who were in want of fresh illustrations wherewith to point their morals." P. T. Barnum's story is a glimpse of early 19th century and a fascinating account of the impresario's life, a legendary promoter and marketeer. Still, he was much more than a showman, he was a politician and a city father; a teetotaler and deep thinker. In short, he was a unique man whose life story is worthy of attention. Barnum's own chronicle began with his 1855 "Life of P. T. Barnum." In 1869 he published the first edition of this "Struggles and Triumphs - Sixty Years' Recollections of P. T. Barnum." Four revisions followed first in 1870, then in 1872 and 1873. This 1889 edition is the last and most complete of all. An imperative for any history buff or any business- or marketing-major, in fact for anyone with ambition.

P. T. Barnum, the great American showman of the 19th century, wrote this short book about making and keeping money. He certainly had life experiences that qualify him for the subject--he started a small newspaper in his twenties, bought and transformed a museum into a showplace for curiosities, built a circus empire that gave performances in America and Europe, promoted a performing tour of a singer, fell into debt in the 1850s and pulled himself out by lecture tours, was a mayor, and founded a hospital. Excerpts: "Those who really desire to attain an independence, have only to set their minds upon it, and adopt the proper means, as they do in regard to any other object which they wish to accomplish, and the thing is easily done. But however easy it may be found to make money, I have no doubt many of my hearers will agree it is the most difficult thing in the world to keep it. ... True economy consists in always making the income exceed the out-go."

Barnum's career of showmanship and charlatanry was marked by a surprising undercurrent of honesty and forthrightness ? and his exuberant autobiography forms a happy combination of all those traits. In a classic of self-accusation and self-justification, he reveals the stories behind his famous hoaxes and publicity stunts, exposing 19th-century America's gullibility and thirst for marvels. The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman as Barnum, is scheduled for release in December 2017. Illustrations throughout.
