Saltmarsh Ecology

Saltmarsh Ecology

Paul Adam

Cambridge University Press
1993
pokkari
This book provides a broad introduction to saltmarsh ecology, concentrating on plants, although much of the information should also be of interest to zoologists. Particular attention is given to the geographical diversity of saltmarsh vegetation and to the ecophysiological mechanisms which permit tolerance to the major challenges of high, but variable, soil salinities and of frequently waterlogged soils. The importance of saltmarshes as functioning ecosystems is discussed and issues relevant to the long-term conservation and management of saltmarshes are considered. Saltmarsh Ecology will be useful to upper level undergraduates and wetland scientists.

Petit Glossaire Pour Servir A L'Intelligence Des Auteurs Decadents Et Symbolistes
This glossary, published in 1888, is the only work of its kind produced by Decadent and Symbolist writers themselves, and is full of ‘definitions’ as mystifying as the words they claim to define. It offers both a scholarly and a humorous examination of linguistic innovation and succeeds in showing how literary language remains subtler and more alive than any of the instruments designed to explain it. A parody of a glossary as much as a glossary proper, and produced as a response to critical accusations of obscurity and preciosity, it assembles an extraordinary array of evocative, hermetic, and often bizarre examples of Symbolist and Decadent writing, including luminaries such as Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Laforgue and Verlaine as well as such writers as Fénéon, Moréas and René Ghil. This is a volume in the series Textes littéraires/Exeter French Texts. The text, introduction and essential notes are all in French.

Rikard was a former pupil of Gianni Castiglione, and Gianni and his detective friend, Antonio Guastafeste, travel to Norway to investigate the murder – a journey that takes them to Grieg’s home at Troldhaugen, to Lysøen, the tranquil island retreat of Norway’s Paganini, Ole Bull, and high into the remote mountains where memories are long and secrets easy to conceal. The missing Hardanger fiddle had a carving of a hauntingly-beautiful young woman on the scroll. Gianni and Guastafeste believe that the woman may hold the key to the whole puzzle. But who was she and what made her so special that Rikard Olsen had to die?

A tense, atmospheric historical crime-thriller - based partly on fact - set in the wintry foothills of the Bavarian Alps in 1886, during the reign of the eccentric "Mad" King Ludwig II. The body of a young diplomat, Christoph Geissler, is found in the snow in a remote forest. Buried in his chest is a wooden spear with mistletoe wrapped around it. Decorated former army officer turned policeman, Major Reinhardt Neumann, is sent from Berlin to investigate. An outsider, mistrusted by the locals, Neumann gradually uncovers evidence of a sinister pagan cult, The Wotan Brotherhood, and a close relationship between the dead young man and King Ludwig – a troubled, emotional ruler obsessed with Wagner, Norse myths and the building of opulent palaces. Is the king involved in the murder, or are there dark forces conspiring against him, powerful enemies who will stop at nothing to bring about his downfall? Neumann is isolated and alone – not a good place to be when the wolves start closing in.
