Synopsis Paul Verlaine, living in 19th century Paris, led an extraordinarily adventurous life. Beset with difficulties with alcohol, his poetry would come to be known as the best of its time. Recently married, Verlaine received a letter from the young Arthur Rimbaud, asking to come to Paris. Verlaine agreed, and so began one of the most fruitful and destructive relationships in world letters. They travelled to London, then on to Brussels. One day, drunk, Verlaine bought a pistol, and after an argument, shot Rimbaud in the wrist. This book is a poetic exploration addressed to Paul Verlaine. There is some discussion of Verlaine's life and work, but mostly Verlaine is used as a sounding board to express a myriad of poetic brevities. The work is one of prose poetry. It is part of a series of books Fearne has written on poets living in 19th century France, including Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Mallarme and now Paul Verlaine.Author Biography Paul Fearne's poetry has appeared widely, including, amongst other places, Westerly, Mascara Literary Review, Snorkel, Australian Poetry Journal, Burrow, and Unusual Work. He holds a PhD from Latrobe University, and a masters from Melbourne University. His first book was launched at the 2010 Melbourne Writers Festival. Friedrich Holderlin lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. His poetry has come to be considered the greatest of that age. In mid life he suffered a schizophrenic break down, and lived the remaining time being cared for. This work, written by someone who also suffers from schizophrenia, is a a great homage to Holderlin. It is written in poetic prose, and is written self-reflexively by a fellow sufferer.

This book of poetry represents 40 pages of poetic experimentation. Using Fearne's dreamy technique, the work is reminiscent of Octavio Paz. Very much a long poem, this work fires the reader into a place beyond.

DescriptionThis book represents a long poem much in the vein of Byron, Milton and Homer. There is no narrative per say, but a free association of images that seek to evoke an impression of beauty in the reader. The title seeks to start with an immediate recognition of beauty. A person who has seen that effect in nature will agree to its power as an object of beauty. There can be no finer experience in nature Fearne believes that this one, and it is hoped, that the poem reaches into the sublime, and comes out ready to impress with its aesthetic sensibilities entirely expressed. About the AuthorPaul Fearne holds a PhD from LaTrobe University, and a Masters degree from the University of Melbourne, which was on beauty. Fearne has been re-diagnosed as having schizo-affective disorder. His poetry has been widely published, including in Westerly, Mascara Literary Review, Unusual Work and Page Seventeen. Poetry is perhaps his first love, although he has wrote in many genres, including philosophical works, autobiography and essay. Book ExtractThere are times In amongst the debris That glean hope And in these times We are thankful But what is there left Of the tenderness of an autumnal day? It is here Where we shed our only desire I have come for you Oh hope And there Where we long to be I have gathered a new beginning That is more than we Indeed Had hoped Be true, and then some And the tide will swim in your favour I am the thing that simply is And here Where we need a traveling mind There will be recompense And all that is left to give The stark insistence of the way Has born a mighty fruit And when we are kind It comes in sleep We dream of it And have our chance at interpretation I feel the levity of all situations That are my guides That have wishing to be true .

DescriptionBaudelaire and the Great Beyond is a book that is difficult to categorise. Part poetic exploration, part rhetorical experiment, this book traverses the multi-faceted world which is Baudelaire's universe by one constant refrain - the book constantly addresses Baudelaire through concise and well formulated 'poetic brevities', that makes salient aspects of our own world, for us to consider. There are no lengthy and scholarly diatribes here, on the nature of Baudelaire's work, or his life - but rather a full poetic exploration of the space between the readers world, and that of Baudelaire. Come for the poetry, stay for the insight.About the AuthorPaul Fearne holds a PhD from LaTrobe University, and a masters from the University of Melbourne. He has been re-diagnosed as having schizoaffective disorder. His poetry has appeared, amongst other places, in Westerly, Page Seventeen, Mascara Literary Review, Unusual Work, Snorkel and Stylus. He has written books on Antonin Artaud, Friedrich Holderlin and Arthur Rimbaud, as well as on other topics. He has appeared on radio and television a number of times.

This book is addressed to the 18th century English Romantic poet and artist, William Blake. Blake is well known for his illuminated books, including Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, and his epic poems, including Milton and Jerusalem. Born in 1757, Blake went to art school at early age. After some time as an apprentice to artist working for the Society of Antiquities, Blake was admitted to the Royal Academy, and exhibited there in 1780. In 1782 Blake married Catherine Boucher, whom he taught how to write and draw. With a career as an artist and poet well underway, Blake took the fateful decision to move from London to Felpham. After an incident with a solder in his front garden, Blake was charged with High Treason, a charge Blake defeated while defending himself. This book is written in poetic prose and follows Blake's work and life to some extent, but mainly uses Blake to formulate poetic brevities to advance the flow of this work addressed to William Blake.Paul Fearne holds a PhD from Latrobe University, and a Masters degree in the philosophy of art on beauty from the University of Melbourne. His poetry has appeared widely, in Westerly, Australian Poetry Journal, Mascara Literary Review, Snorkel, Unusual Work and Stylus, amongst others. Fearne's first book was launched at the 2010 Melbourne Writer's Festival, and he was then interviewed on Radio National around the country. Fearne's interest in 18th / 19th century letters follows up from his last book on Lord Byron, and books on French poets, Paul Verlaine, Mallarme, Baudelaire and Rimbaud.
To Hear the Heart, to Hear the Sea

To Hear the Heart, to Hear the Sea

This is a short novel written in poetic prose. Having said that, it has no narrative, nor main characters. It is a work of sustained poetic prose. Regularly it returns to the same motif - When we hear the heart, and when we hear the sea, we are hearing the same thing. And, as we discover, there are many ways to go about doing that - for instance we could have a stethoscope, and drive to the sea. We could then apply the stethoscope to our chest, and get out of the car, and go down to the sea, thereby getting a sense of what this phenomenon is like. The structure of the book also lends itself to this motif. Chapters of long stanzas, and chapters of alternat shorter stanzas, give the book a sensation of pulsation, much like a heart, much like the sea. But the book is broader than that, as you will discover. Many of Fearne's recent books are written in poetic prose, but they are all addressed to 19th century poets. This book is more at liberty to resonate poetically. It uses assonance, and indeed rhyme, but on the whole, it is written in blank verse.Paul Fearne is a writer living and working in Melbourne, Australia. During his Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University, he experienced a psychosis. He kept a diary during that time. He went on to do a masters and then a PhD. His first book, his diary, was launched at the 2010 Melbourne Writers Festival In 2023, after much work in the field, and many books published, Fearne went into remission. During the lockdown years of the covid pandemic, Fearne regularly was a guest on the Brainwaves radio show. He spoke about 19th century poets he had written books on.
