In this hour, believers must be clear about who they are in Christ. Many of us are functioning day-to-day with the mentality of a servant rather than the identity of a son. We're constantly working for God, hoping to be "used" by Him. At the end of the day we hope, pray, and cross our fingers that we've done enough to please God. Our day could have been so much richer and fuller if we had only lived as sons and daughters-having received what He's done for us. The Father wants to release us into the glorious liberty of sonship. The glory of the redeemed-the right to call ourselves the sons of God is ours by inheritance, but settling into that mentality is a journey. It may start on a Sunday morning, and then it rolls over into our lives-into our work week, into our relationships-as we are released into the liberty of who He has created us to be. This book takes a look at the ultimate example of religious performance and the story of one man's most radical transformation: The conversion from Saul of Tarsus to the Apostle Paul. We will track with Saul through the machinery of works and achievement, to the depths of hell, where zeal finds it starkest expression. Like Saul, blinded on the road to Damascus, we must each confront our own religious zeal in the face of our Lord Jesus, and then confront our blindness as well. Saul entered the encounter with his eyes wide open to his own ability and self-righteousness, only to have them darkened to those realities. When the scales fell from his eyes (Acts 9:18), he walked out of the home of Ananias and began a journey into sonship. Saul went in, but Paul came out. If you head into this book confident in your ability to live for God, do the right thing, curry favor through your perseverance, or if you are exhausted from trying, then I pray that you too become blinded to your own ability so that your eyes can be opened to His love and finished work on your behalf. Jodocus Badius Ascensius (1462-1535) was a scholar and printer who played a central role in the flourishing of humanism and print culture in the French Renaissance. In a career spanning four decades, he was involved with the print publication of something approaching one thousand editions. He was known for the 'familiar' commentaries he wrote and published as introductions to the major authors of Latin (and, less frequently, Greek) antiquity, as well as on texts by medieval and contemporary authors. His commentaries and prefaces document the early stages of French humanism, and his texts played a major role in forming the minds of future generations. This book provides an account of Badius's contributions to pedagogy, scholarship, printing and humanist culture. Its main focus is on Latin language commentaries on classical texts. It examines Badius's multiple roles in the light of changing conceptions of textual culture during the Renaissance. It also explores the wider context of the communities with which Badius cultivated relationships: scholars and printers, figures from religious orders, the university and officialdom. It considers the readerships for which Badius produced texts in France, England, Scotland, the Low Countries, and beyond. Ovid's Heroides, a collection consisting mainly of poetic love letters sent by mythological heroines to their absent lovers, held a particular fascination for Renaissance readers. To understand their responses to these letters, we must ask exactly how and in what contexts those readers first encountered them: were they read in Latin or in the vernacular; as source texts for the learning of grammar and history or as love poetry; as epistolary and rhetorical models or as moral examples? Renaissance Postscripts: Responding to Ovid's Heroides in Sixteenth-Century France by Paul White offers an account of the wide variety of responses to the Heroides within the realm of humanist education, in the works of both Latin commentators and French translators, and as an example of a particular mode of imitation. The author examines how humanists shaped the discourse of Ovid's heroines and heroes to pedagogical ends and analyses even the woodcuts that illustrated various editions. This study traces comparative readings of French translations through a period noted for important shifts in attitudes to the text and to poetic translation in general and offers an important history of the "reply epistle"-a mode of imitation attempted both in Latin and the vernacular.
