Rory suspects that his wife Sadie, is having an affair with John, his best friend. He can hardly believe that John would do such a thing to him, but when his suspicions are confirmed, he decides not to confront the two of them, but to destroy John's life and to divorce his wife in order to benefit from her wealth. John's drug and drink habits, and the secrets that he'd imparted to Rory over the years, are used against him. He is arrested and charged with serious offences, and whilst on bail, after a drugs and drink induced binge, John drives his car and kills an old man, leaving him for dead. The police are looking for him. He ends up on the streets of London where he turns to petty crime in order to survive. His luck runs out when he unwittingly steals the case of a Russian diplomat. Vinnie Miller is a successful drug importer on the Costa del Sol. He lures his son John into the firm, although he didn't want anything to do with the gang. Due to the hatred John has for Vinnie, he plans the takeover of the business with the help of a gang member. John tracks down his long lost brother, and between the three men, they con Vinnie into believing that a load of cannabis has been seized by the Spanish police. In a fit of anger, Vinnie kills two of his mules, but doesn't tell John what he's done. John perpetuates the illusion that the police are onto them. Vinnie disappears to his villa in Barbados. In a drink and drug binge, he beats up his new Barbadian girlfriend and leaves her scarred for life. With the help of Troy, a local man, John and his brother plan the horrific death of their father. Troy's friend is arrested for another murder and informs on him. Troy informs on the brothers, and the whole thing falls apart when arrests are simultaneously made in Spain and the UK.

John Bull and Alfie Turps are two friends having a drink at the "Fat Duck Inn." Both of them are knocked unconscious and hours later find themselves on a ship bound for Spain. They've been kidnapped by a privateer. When they regain consciousness they're given the opportunity to either join the crew or be thrown overboard. They both choose the former. And so their life at sea begins, and they love it. On one of his voyages to Bristol, John visits Lucy who is a past lover. She is an Innkeeper. She becomes pregnant, but John doesn't know about it as he has returned to Spain. When he returns, he's overjoyed at the news that he's the father of James, but alas he can't stay long. Whilst he's away Lucy is pestered by a bully that has moved into the village. John deals with the bully but has to see off his crew to Spain and takes Lucy. He returns to find the Inn destroyed. The bully and his son were seen setting the fire, they die mercilessly. Only young James can see the ghost of a boy. He's lost his toy ship.

James and Nat go back to sea for the last time, taking young John, who is James's son, and his best friend Joe Arnold. After a violent and horrendous act from Tom Crow against his old partner, they are forced to sail back early from India, when they are caught up in a fearsome storm. On their return, James and Nat hand over the ship to young John and Joe. They will spend five years with Tom Crow, learning the ropes to become Captains themselves. Their adventures begin on their first voyage. They both see ghosts on board including Joe's father, who was alive when he'd sailed. There's a big shock coming to Joe on his return. His life will never be the same again.

Detective Danny Arnold is part of a new team that has been formed to go underground in British prisons in order to discover how various crimes are being planned and by whom from within their walls. His target is George O'Brian, a particularly nasty character who has a history of extreme violence. Danny soon discovers that his target has links to a Russian gang, and is actively involved with the smuggling of illegal workers and drugs. He also discovers that O'Brian has ordered the killings of people from within prison. He practically runs the place. O'Brian is blackmailing the governor, who commits suicide as a result. After a coke binge O'Brian picks a fight with another inmate, but is seriously injured. He bribes an officer to plant a bag of cocaine in the man's cell. The two men have a confrontation and O'Brian is accused of raping new inmates. He denies the claim, but it later proves to be true after a medical examination on his latest victim.

Captain James Bull sails to Boston to meet up with his partner Nat. He needs to go to Cuba on the way to buy more cigar leaf. They get driven off course by a mighty storm and almost perish. When he finally arrives in Boston, he finds it devastated by the storm. Nat's wife and child are dead. Nat rejoins James on the ""Bessie"" and they continue their adventures at sea. More women and more trouble await them as usual

Lofty and his friends are true Londoners. He is asked by them to arrange a vacation, but they insist that the destination remains a secret. Being an adventurer at heart, Lofty arranges a trip to the mountains in Spain. The area is remote, and rarely sees human visitors. They are livid when they discover where they are going. Simon is shot dead by a rifle shot, and it soon becomes evident that the friends are being hunted. Eastern Europeans have paid a vast sum to hunt human prey. Simon's mobile contains some disturbing news for Lofty, who is an ex marine. He'd benefited from survival training so took the fight to the killers. They were dispatched by various methods. The friends are lost, and stumble across a cannabis farm way up in the mountains. They are captured and held. Lofty develops a bond with the boss of the gang, and is asked to stay. One of the friends dies, and the other is killed by the merciless boss. Lofty is asked to be the eyes and ears of the boss during his absence.

Cornelius Left University with a degree, but has done nothing with his first class education. He lives with his parents, his mother dotes on him and waits on him hand and foot, while his father sees him as a lazy good for nothing slob, who hasn't done a day's work in years. He spends all day either on, or in his bed, supposedly working on the the problems of the world, while his father is out at work. Corny meets an old school friend on one of his rare days out which sets off a disastrous chain of events....
