Focusing on what he calls 'the performative gaze', the author explores the artistic world of the Urbino painter Federico Barocci (1535-1612) in the context of Renaissance culture. Through analysis of Barocci's works, Gillgren also sheds new light on Renaissance aesthetic communication generally. The first part of the book discusses the poetics of Early Modern painting, based on contemporary theories of Reception Aesthetics, hermeneutics and phenomenology, but grounded in Renaissance culture itself through numerous examples from Early Modern painting. The author discusses works by such artists as Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Velázquez and Poussin from the point of view of their spectator status. The second part deals specifically with the art of Federico Barocci, showing in detail how his works relate to aspects of the gaze and to their intended spectators. Gillgren's method is unusual in that he takes care to set the images within their original physical contexts (lighting, space, framing materials, angle of viewer approach) as much as possible through careful analysis of early descriptions of now destroyed or modified chapels. The third section of the volume contains a brief catalogue of Barocci's paintings, presented in a chronological order, with a full bibliography and with details about the painting's original locations.

Michelangelos storhet som konstnär ligger inte bara i hans strävan efter fullkomlighet och skönhet, utan även i hans unika sätt att närma sig den konstnärliga processen och platsens betydelse. Michelangelos fresker i Sixtinska kapellet, skulpturer i Medicikapellet och andra monument bör alla förstås som dramatiserande tillskott till miljöerna de placerades i. Istället för att anpassas och smälta in i sina omgivningar så interagerar dessa verk med rummen, ceremonierna och musiken som fanns runtom dem. Man kan också se hur konstnären i sina ofullbordade verk och egna skrifter pekar på en estetik under ständig förhandling där processen är lika viktig som de färdigställda verken. Peter Gillgren belyser Michelangelos verk som tillkomna i en strävan att förändra och ompröva den miljö som redan fanns på plats. Det är en nydanande och originell studie som tillför ett nytt, oumbärligt kritiskt perspektiv till konstvetenskapen.

Många forskare med utländsk bakgrund, flera av dem flyktingar, har berikat Sverige men är trots det fortfarande okända. Efter att Vitterhetsakademien bytt namn på sin biografiserie från Svenska lärde till Lärda i Sverige blev det dock möjligt att i den även uppmärksamma utländska humanistiska forskare som verkat här. Med denna utgångspunkt berättar Peter Gillgren om konsthistorikern Felix Horb (18901958) som på grund av nazisternas förföljelser 1938 tvangs att fly till Sverige.Horb var född i en judisk familj i Böhmen men fick sin utbildning i Wien och ingick där i en krets av konsthistoriker av vilka flera kom att bli världsberömda. I Sverige blev Horb ansvarig för Stockholms universitets konstsamling, men han kom aldrig att ingå i det konstvetenskapliga etablissemanget. Han behöll dock kontakten med sina kolleger från ungdomen och hans brevväxling med dem visar att han var en avancerad konsthistoriker vars synpunkter vann respekt hos de ledande namnen inom ämnet. Horbs öde är en gripande illustration av hur förföljelse, flykt och förlust av ett hemland kan ödelägga en lovande forskarkarriär, och samtidigt en hyllning av en person vars vetenskapliga glöd aldrig avmattades trots de tragiska yttre omständigheterna i hans liv.
