The Chasseurs of the Guard had its origins in the Guides raised by General Bonaparte during his Italian Campaign of 1796. Not only did the Chasseurs prove to be excellent soldiers, but they also served as Napoleon's immediate escort whenever he went on campaign. This book provides an overview of the regimental history of the corps, profiling some of its most memorable personalities, including Jean-Baptise Bessières, Marshal of France, and Prince Eugene de Beauharnais, Commander of the Chasseurs à cheval. The uniforms, guidons and standards of the Consular Guard, later renamed the Imperial Guard, are illustrated throughout the book.
This book examines the uniforms, equipment, history and organisation of George Washington’s Army. The chronology of the American Revolution is summarised, and its major personalities introduced. Uniforms are shown in full illustrated detail.
In 1921, Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick Gerald Peake formed the Arab Legion as a police force in the former British protectorate of Transjordan. The Legion's main roles were to keep order among Transjordian tribes and safeguard the villagers from Bedouins. In subsequent years, under the leadership of Glubb Pasha, the Arab Legion was transformed into the best-trained of all Arab armies. This richly illustrated book examines the history of the Arab Legion, detailing the infantry, supporting arms and services, and air, sea, police and national guard forces. It also profiles leaders, like Pasha, who were influential in the evolution of this force.
An eye-opening introduction to one of the most audacious special operations forces of World War Two, written by a man who led them into battle. An ideal book for people who enjoyed SAS: Rogue Heroes and Band of Brothers. In the aftermath of the disastrous Battle of France and evacuation from Dunkirk, Winston Churchill told his military chiefs of staff that "Enterprises must be prepared, with specially trained troops of the hunter class, who can develop a reign of terror down on these coasts, first of all on the 'butcher-and-bolt' policy... leaving a trail of German corpses behind them." By the end of the month the Commandos had been formed from volunteers and were already implementing their hit-and-run tactics that would make them famous. Only the best recruits were sent; they had to be young, absolutely fit, able to drive motor vehicles, and unable to be seasick. One of the conditions of service, clearly laid down, was that any many might voluntarily return to his unit after an operation. Few ever asked to do so. Peter Young, who volunteered shortly after returning from Dunkirk, rose to become commander of the 1st Commando Brigade by the end of the war. In Commando he charts the development of this unique fighting force from its emergence through the course of its major operations, including: Lofoten, Spitzbergen and Vaagso in Norway, the invasion of Italy, the St. Nazaire and Dieppe raids on the French coast, along with numerous other operations. 'it reads like an adventure story; for that is what the Commandos engaged in - a series of grim adventures from which a high number did not return. Their adventures not only raised the alarm along the occupied coast line - they raised the morale of the Allied sympathisers everywhere, progressively, as the scope and the range of their operations spread from Europe to the Mediterranean coastlines.' Brigadier Anthony Farrar-Hockley Peter Young's Commando should be essential reading for all looking to learn more about this intrepid Second World War fighting force.

The reputation of the oak is based not on superlatives but on personality. In human terms, it is not a celebrity, but a reliable citizen. Its enduring legacy is evident in place- and surnames, in landmarks and buildings and as a sturdy staple of engineering material.More than any other tree, the oak has been a symbol of strength and durability. Venerated in pagan societies, elements of its worship were absorbed by other religions: Celtic mythology, for example, where it is believed to be a gateway between worlds; or Norse, where it is sacred to Thor, god of thunder, as the tree most often struck by lightning. The oak has been adopted by many countries as a national symbol, particularly in western Europe and the United States. Several individual oaks are of great historical importance, such as the Royal Oak within which King Charles II of England hid to escape the Roundheads, and the Charter Oak in Hartford, Connecticut, which became a symbol of American independence. In Oak, Peter Young illuminates and examines this magnificent and ubiquitous tree, tracing its biological history in its many manifestations, natural and cultural. Much-loved internationally, the oak is to be found in works of art, folk-tales, poems and songs. Oak narrates the biography of the tree that since time immemorial has been a symbol of loyalty and strength, generosity and renewal.

An unforgettable personal account of fighting with the Commandos in World War Two. An ideal book for fans of Andy McNab, Robert O'Neill or Marcus Luttrell. For Peter Young the Second World War was a truly global conflict. From Norway to Northern France, Italy to Burma, Young rose through the ranks of the commandos to become a brigadier, commanding the 1st Commando Brigade by the end of the war. Storm from the Sea charts Young's journey through World War Two, with captivating accounts of the raids at Lofoten, Vaagso and Dieppe with the famous 3 Commando. Young uncovers how the Commandos with their impeccable training and camaraderie were able to overcome Nazi forces in Sicily and Italy before they joined with the 1st Special Service Brigade for the liberation of France. Peter Young's memoir is an enthralling, first-hand account of his time spent fighting with the Commandos during World War Two. It should be essential reading for all interested in one of the most important special forces in military history. "readers interested in a combat narrative will find that Storm from the Sea makes a welcome addition to their libraries." Maj. James Gates, USAF, Air & Space Power Journal "As Storm from the Sea reveals, Peter was in his element in the Commandos during the Second World War. ... Apart from battlefield courage to an unusual degree, he had the rare ability to think quickly - as if from first principles - in military situations. That intelligence and common sense, together with his bravery, robustness, sense of humour and personality, live again in these stirring pages." John Adair
An eye-opening memoir of service with the Arab Legion in the tense world of the Middle East. An ideal book for fans of T.E. Lawrence, Andy McNab and Nathaniel Fick. In the aftermath of his time spent serving with the Commandos in the Second World War, Peter Young became frustrated with the mundaneness of peacetime duties, and so in 1953 he joined the Arab Legion under the command of Sir John Glubb. Although the First Arab-Israeli War had ended four years before, tensions were still high between Israel and its neighbours by the time that Young entered the region. Over the course of the next three years Young saw the Jordanian Arab Legion grow to a substantial force with modern training and equipment, developing into a powerful counterweight to the rising strength of Israel. Bedouin Command provides fascinating insight into this remarkable Arabian army which collaborated with its large number of British officers to maintain peace in the Middle East. Yet, Young also explains how this happy relationship ended due to nationalist sentiments rising among the Jordanians leading to the dismissal of Young and his fellow senior officers. Young's book is a fascinating memoir of one British officer's time spent serving in the Middle East. He writes compassionately about his men, who he saw as excellent soldiers, and although he was eventually removed from his position Young's admiration for the Arab world is clear throughout the book. "The personal account of a regimental commander in the Arab Legion from 1953 to 1956." Foreign Affairs

Peter Young examines the tortoise in all these guises, as well as a military tactical formation, its exploitation by mariners and others for food, as ornament (in tortoiseshell), as a motif in art, and in space research. He looks at the movement away from exploitation to conservation and even the uses of the tortoise in advertising. As well as examples of species, illustrations from around the world include monuments, sculptures, coins, stamps, objets d’art, drawings, cartoons, advertisements and X-rays.The book will appeal not only to tortoise lovers but also to readers of cultural histories around the world.
