Born in the Bronx and raised in Queens, growing up Murphy was best known for being an elite basketball prospect in NYC. After graduating high school, Murphy did not qualify academically to receive any division one or division two scholarships so he played for Mark Adams at Howard Junior College in Big Spring, TX. The team went 35-2 and were ranked the number one team in the nation.
