The indigenous movement in Ecuador was one of the most influential social movements in Latin America during the 1990s. It had a high mobilization capability, formed broad alliances, and had a clear discourse. However, since the early 2000s, it has been in crisis due to problems with national leadership. This only changed in October 2019 when a national uprising led to the movement's reappearance in political attention, the reconstruction of alliances, and a renovation of its discourse. A national uprising in June 2022 further strengthened this development, producing a struggle around neoliberalism.With this book, Philipp Altmann helps readers understand the evolution of the Indigenous movement in Ecuador. In his chronological presentation, he emphasizes the position and perspectives of the activists and organizations of the indigenous movement and delves into the movement’s history and the exploration of its crises and its uprisings.

This Palgrave Pivot presents a concise yet comprehensive history of sociology in Ecuador. The case of Ecuador is especially interesting, as Ecuadorian sociology oscillated between theoretical debates—some of them out of time—and a constant search for ways of applying them to the local reality. In the decades after its formal creation in 1915, early academic sociology in Ecuador worked creatively with already outdated theories around positivism and organicism to understand the indigenous population's position, the regional fragmentation, and the formation of a coherent nation-state in Ecuador. After a short attempt of installing a more technical sociology in the 1960s, those topics were taken up and re-read by Marxist-inspired critical sociology after the 1970s, leading to the nation-wide institutionalization of one particular tradition that could connect to continental debates. This book engages with several relevant debates in social sciences and humanities, particularly by adding tothe thriving research on social sciences and the role of the university and higher education in Latin America. Furthermore, it touches some recently influential topics in sociology: Ecuadorian sociology can be read as Southern Theory or engaged with from a postcolonial or decolonial perspective; the research on how ideas travel, are diffused or localized is vital for understanding sociology in Ecuador; the relation between academia and politics; and more.

Gerade deshalb gewinnt die Weiblichkeit der mexikanischen Mestizinnen eine besondere Qualit t, die eine M glichkeit bieten kann, nicht nur eine, fremde" Kultur, sondern auch die eigene Wahrnehmung zu analysieren.

Jahrhunderts, wenn nicht des gesamten Sp tmittelalters gesehen werden. Viele Ver nderungen und Reformen, die sich teilweise schon lange vorher angek ndigt hatten, wurden durch die Pest und die sie umgebenden Ph nomene, wenn nicht endg ltig ausgel st, so doch zumindest forciert. Kann man dieses Bild des Mittelalters weiterhin halten, oder wurde die Bedeutung der Pest bersch tzt? M gliche Zusammenh nge sollen aufgedeckt, eventuelle Unstimmigkeiten innerhalb der historischen Forschung deutlich gemacht werden. Die erste Pest und die sie "umgebenden" Kriege und Katastrophen werden h ufig als "Krise des Mittelalters" bezeichnet. Wieweit kann man eine solche Etikettierung noch halten, gab es einen Zusammenhang zwischen der Pest und den im 14. Jahrhundert stattfindenden Neuerungen und schleichenden Reformen? Und -was hier mehr interessiert- wie stark -oder berhaupt vorhanden- ist der Zusammenhang zwischen der Pest, den Gei lerz gen und den Pogromen? Die ltere Forschung hat dazu eindeutige Theorien, die hier -soweit m glich- berpr ft und an der neueren Forschung gemessen werden sollen.
