Sex, skvaller och opera – det är adelns dekadenta nöjen i det franska 1700-talet, om vi ska tro Farliga förbindelser. I boken spårar dock intressena ur, då två adliga vänner för ro skull börjar tävla om att förföra och förgöra oskyldiga unga. Genom de inblandades brev målas en hård och falsk värld upp för läsaren, präglad av hur de mäktiga cyniskt manipulerar de svaga men alla är förlorare. Verket är än i dag ett oroande vittnesbörd om hur människans mörka impulser – hämnd, kontrollbegär, illvilja – steg för steg leder alla berörda till undergången. Med Farliga förbindelser ville officeren Pierre Choderlos de Laclos (1741–1803) skriva en bok som skulle röra om i världen och fortsätta att göra så även efter hans död. Båda önskningarna uppfylldes. Boken utkom några få år före franska revolutionen, blev en omedelbar succé och åberopades ofrånkomligen av revolutionärer som en vältalig skildring av adelns förkastliga seder. Författaren var snabb med att ta jakobinernas parti när revolutionen bröt ut och han slutade sina dagar som general under Napoleon.
