In this third book: 70 more sites are featured. Each entry includes an essay and a reproduction of one of Ray's pen-&-ink drawings. Sites included were selected from Ray's award-winning newspaper column, Sketches of Alaska. Take an artistic tour of -Eastern Interior Alaska -historic sites. For the past 30 years Fairbanks artist and writer Ray Bonnell has been tramping the roads and trails of Eastern Interior Alaska. His destinations have been old mining camps, roadhouses, homesteads, villages, and other historic locations. Some of these sites are being preserved, but many are fading away-the result of accidents, development, time, and vandalism. A few of the historic structures he has visited have already disappeared or undergone dramatic changes. Through his essays and detailed pen-&-ink drawings Ray has been taking "snapshots in time" of these historic sites. Many of those snapshots appear in this book.Sixty-one historic sites featured. Each entry consists of a pen-&-ink fine-art illustration and essay.Sites included were selected from the first two and a half years of Ray's newspaper column, "Sketches of Alaska." That column received the Contributions to Alaska History award from the Alaska Historical Society in 2011.All of the sites are on or near the road system, so you can drive or walk to most of them.A map of Eastern Interior Alaska showing the general location of sites is included.

A Creek, a Hill & a Forty is a firsthand narrative of the early years of Alaska's Matanuska Colony-with the story told through the personal letters of one colonist, Margaret Miller. Margaret, along with her husband and three daughters, emigrated to Alaska as a colonist in May 1935. She was an erudite and talented writer, and after arriving in Alaska, Margaret wrote weekly multi-page letters to her mother back in Wisconsin-letters that her mother kept-letters that form the core of this book.Uncolored by the passage of time, Margaret's letters reflect colony life as it happened. Her experiences may not be those of every colonist, but, through her eyes can be seen some of their fears and motivations, some of their struggles and accomplishments. Including three maps and 60 photographs, A Creek, a Hill & a Forty is an enjoyable read that provides a glimpse into the lives of the colonists, as well as insights into the colony's development.
