Building a Market

Building a Market

Each year, North Americans spend as much money fixing up their homes as they do buying new ones. This obsession with improving our dwellings has given rise to a multibillion-dollar industry that includes countless books, consumer magazines, a cable television network, and thousands of home improvement stores. "Building a Market" charts the rise of the home improvement industry in the United States and Canada from the end of World War I into the late 1950s. Drawing on the insights of business, social, and urban historians, and making use of a wide range of documentary sources, Richard Harris shows how the middle-class preference for home ownership first emerged in the 1920s - and how manufacturers, retailers, and the federal government combined to establish the massive home improvement market and a pervasive culture of Do-It-Yourself. Deeply insightful, "Building a Market" is the carefully crafted history of the emergence and evolution of a home improvement revolution that changed not just American culture but the American landscape as well.

The evening looks set to be a lively one until a string of hilarious disasters strike, including a distinct lack of guests, a burning garden shed, a marauding Zimmer frame and the prospect of an irate husband on the prowl.4 women, 3 men

This musical follows the story of the lives, loves and laughs of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap class in a dingy church hall. Accompanied on the piano by the lugubrious Mrs Fraser, the tappers improve, so much so, that the show climaxes with a big glitzy tap routine number.

An earlier version of Party Piece, this play ingeniously uses the same set to represent three different homes. We see Charles, preoccupied with finding a fancy dress costume, and Norma, obsessed with her garden and kitchen; Hilary, returned from a health farm to find her mother-in-law in residence; and Susan and Keith, unable to enjoy a weekend without their children. Add a suicidal Katy and an incorrect party date and we are set for a confusing evening!5 women, 4 men

Grace Andrews first met brothers Albie and Ray Rodway in her early 20s while holidaying alone in Corfu. More than two decades on, Grace and Albie unexpectedly run into each other again at a hotel in London. Remembering old feelings from the holiday, they become a couple and within six months get married. The play opens on the afternoon of their wedding when Albie has over-indulged on champagne and Ray, his best man, is helping him up the stairs to his Manchester flat. Grace's tactless and interfering mother, Rose, observes proceedings with an ever-critical eye. Between Albie's drunkenness and Rose's barbed commentary, not to mention the frequent phone calls from mysterious women, Grace finds an ally in reliable, good-natured family man Ray. When he produces an old photograph from the Corfu holiday, however, it soon transpires that the man Grace first fell in love with is not the man she thought he was.

If it were not for the thoughtfulness of the author who has kindly translated the dialogue of two of the characters into English, the audience would be as confused as the actors, who play a Finn, an Italian and an Englishman - none of whom speak a word of the other's languages.1 women, 2 men

Stepping Out is a warm and very funny play about the lives laughs and loves of a group of women (and one man) attending a weekly tap-dance class in a dingy North London church hall. There is ex-professional dancer Mavis who runs the class; cheerfully overweight Sylvia; Andy a plain do-gooder with no confidence; snobby but well meaning Vera; timid Dorothy who works in Social Security; Maxine attractive sharp and very shrewd; fat plain Lynne; Rose the self-styled "token spade" and Geffrey the lone male. As the play progresses the class's dancing improves to such an extent that by the climax a grand charity show performance they have been transformed into triumphant tappers worthy of any chorus line.

Half-timbered houses, cottages and barnes are a familiar feature of the landscape, but only rarely do we have an opportunity to see below the surface and understand how they were planned and constructed. Timber-framed buildings catch the imagination of those who work with them because of their beauty, their strength and the quality of the material of which they were made: English oak. Many thousands of buildings of all ages still remain to remind us the strength of the tradition. This book looks behind the commong image of 'black and white' houses, showing how timber buildings were built and how they vary from region to region.
