Grass Roots Politics

Grass Roots Politics

Richard Jensen offers a new interpretation of the last 180 years of American political history--one seen from the grass roots perspective. He is concerned with the individual voter's relationship to the party, the issues, and the campaigns. He explores the evolution of American political parties in terms of their appeal to individual voters, of the issues selected, and campaign strategies. He examines different voter coalitions that formed and dissolved during the past 175 years and explains the dynamics of group affiliation with one or the other party. He demonstrates how the electorate has modernized over time and assesses the issues raised, and the values challenged by the process of political modernization. Jensen offers his own theory of campaign strategy, sketching its evolution from army-like organization to modern advertising. The second half of the book is a collection of documents describing important political issues and political coalitions through the years. These readings reveal how politicians at the grass roots level thought, what tactics they used, and how the average voter responded to their appeals.

The Resettlement Administration, Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information in combination produced the largest documentary project in history. Over 100,000 photographs were taken, covering all aspects of life. This project enhanced the reputations of established photographers like Walker Evans and Ben Shahn, and it launched the careers of Dorothea Lange and Gordon Parks. Less well known photographers also captured scenes of American life that are moving, dramatic and evocative. This volume features the work of two of them, Ted Jung and Edwin Locke. Jung's small portfolio includes scenes of rural poverty captured with remarkable sympathy and respect for human dignity. Locke, who spent several years as personal secretary to Roy Stryker, who headed the documentary projects, also accepted a few assignments, and captured the beauty of New England, as well as the plight of African-American flood victims in Arkansas.

Historically accurate, this novel treads its way back to the mid-19th century. Here we find our country embroiled in the tumultuous task of nation building. Texas had just been accepted as the 28th State and to protect it from a displeased Mexican government, General Zachary Taylor had some 3500 American troops guarding the southern border and assaulting important communities south of the Rio Grande. This assignment embodied intervals of both war and peace with an almost always unpredictable outcome. Not surprisingly, these transitional imponderables seemed to intensify nearly every emotion known to man. Our relatively young protagonist, JK, covered the entire gambit of these encounters with uncertain moments of loneliness and despair intermingled with eminent danger and intense fear. While frequently outnumbered, but employing the military genius of Zachary Taylor, JK survived a multitude of battles. Even more surprising, here in the heart of an adversarial country, he found himself deeply in love with a girl that he dreamed of taking home as his wife. Sadly, the ecstasy of this stormy romance was shattered by a cruel deception, and the most hurtful betrayal of a trust that could ever be imagined.About the AuthorBorn in 1934 during the height of the Great Depression, Richard grew up on a prairie farm in southern Alberta, Canada. During those early years of rural life, he ran a winter trap line and enjoyed the privileges of hunting and fishing. As a teenager in pursuit of outdoor adventure he always sought summer employment in remote wilderness settings. This included Kinbasket Lake, British Columbia, the Foothills of Alberta and the isolation of northern Alberta's, Athabaska Oil Sands. Richard's childhood plans of becoming a commercial airline pilot were thwarted when it was discovered that his vision did not meet the standards of the day. As an alternative, he earned a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Oklahoma. Following graduation he enjoyed successful employment within various venues of the petroleum industry. After a series of executive positions his career culminated with a partnership, "Thomson-Jensen Petroleum's Limited, Calgary Canada." As a partner and chief executive of this exploration vehicle it is not surprising that he became interested in the history of oil rich Texas. Having retired from the petroleum industry in 1987, Richard now resides in Midland, Texas. His first two novels "Don't Drink the Water" and "The Fur-lined Crypt" have received excellent reviews from the few who have read them.

Marion Post Wolcott's work with the Farm Security Administration covered the end of the Great Depression and the beginning of the second world war; few photographers covered as much of the United States, with photos from the Mountain West, the Deep South, the Florida Coast and New England.

The rough and fuzzy set approaches presented here open up many new frontiers for continued research and development Computational Intelligence and Feature Selection provides readers with the background and fundamental ideas behind Feature Selection (FS), with an emphasis on techniques based on rough and fuzzy sets. For readers who are less familiar with the subject, the book begins with an introduction to fuzzy set theory and fuzzy-rough set theory. Building on this foundation, the book provides: A critical review of FS methods, with particular emphasis on their current limitations Program files implementing major algorithms, together with the necessary instructions and datasets, available on a related Web site Coverage of the background and fundamental ideas behind FS A systematic presentation of the leading methods reviewed in a consistent algorithmic framework Real-world applications with worked examples that illustrate the power and efficacy of the FS approaches covered An investigation of the associated areas of FS, including rule induction and clustering methods using hybridizations of fuzzy and rough set theories Computational Intelligence and Feature Selection is an ideal resource for advanced undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and professional engineers. However, its straightforward presentation of the underlying concepts makes the book meaningful to specialists and nonspecialists alike.
