This Family History traces the varied fortunes of the Smiths of West Yorkshire. It also examines their connection with other families, including: - The Absaloms of Hampshire and London - The Cardens of Brighton - The Cloughs of Sutton and Crosshills - The Fareys of Skipton - The Fosters of Waterford, Ireland and Birmingham - The Gillinsons of Leeds - The Hastings of Holderness - The Myersons of London - The Stamfords of East Yorkshire - The Wilsons of Calderdale A key theme running throughout this History has been the determined use of what could aptly be termed 'survival strategies' by successive generations of Smiths. Their aim was always to bolster a precarious 'respectability' in what was often a harsh and unstable environment. The mass of factual and bibliographical information found within its pages will prove useful to Research Students and Family, Local and Social Historians. Above all, it offers a legacy to inspire both present and future family members

Considering the range of stars that have claimed Bill Monroe as an influence,Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, and Jerry Garcia are just a few,it can be said that no single artist has had as broad an impact on American popular music as he did. For sixty years, Monroe was a star at the Grand Ole Opry, and when he died in 1996, he was universally hailed as "the Father of Bluegrass." But the personal life of this taciturn figure remained largely unknown. Delving into everything from Monroe's professional successes to his bitter rivalries, from his isolated childhood to his reckless womanizing, veteran bluegrass journalist Richard D. Smith has created a three-dimensional portrait of this brilliant, complex, and contradictory man. Featuring over 120 interviews, this scrupulously researched work,a Chicago Tribune Choice Selection, New York Times Notable Book, and Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2000,stands as the authoritative biography of a true giant of American music.

Albert Einstein simply called it the 'Drift, ' where time and space would unexpectedly drift apart for a short period of time and then come back together at an unpredictable place in the future. It was a theory that received little press in 1938 and even less support from the scientific community at the time. Einstein went on to pursue other theories that were more acceptable and ultimately dropped the theory of 'Drift.' But now, one powerful creature that had been caught in the drift fifty million years earlier had suddenly reemerged - a sea creature that had now adapted to living in the air.

The migration of Germans to Argentina at the end of WWII wasn't really an unusual event in history, but the old abandoned train station in the jungle where most disembarked held a secret few were aware of.As an Archeologist, David Adams had a ken interest in finding the derelict station, but not keen enough to travel from UCLA to the jungles of South America. It took his friend, Justin Bradley to get him there. The two sat off on a mission to not only find the old station, but to recover something that was hidden one hundred feet below its abandoned tracks. Neither man had any idea that what they were about to discover would change history forever.

Questions of discipline and order arise wherever formal education is practised, and are particularly acute for those training to teach or in their first school posts. For many years now writing on these topics has tended to depict teaching as the deployment of ‘skills’ and ‘techniques’ and competent teachers as those who successfully ‘manage’ their classes. This approach is criticised by Richard Smith as manipulative and destructive of the kind of pupil-teacher relationship conducive to any but the most trivial sorts of learning. Thus the philosophical issues which the book explores are shown throughout to have their roots in problems associated with established thinking and practice, and the author’s ideas have considerable practical relevance. He argues for a thorough reappraisal of the nature and basis of the teacher’s authority and demonstrates the importance of a proper understanding of the function of punishment. He suggests that many of the problems of discipline that teachers meet may actually stem from inappropriate ways of treating pupils, and shows that solutions to these problems must be compatible with the degree of initiative and personal responsibility that it is the business of education to foster. Schools have changed in many ways, largely for the better, since the first edition of this book appeared: the young people in them are generally treated with far more respect than was the case a quarter of a century ago. The voices of a more repressive tradition however still make themselves heard from time to time. It is therefore important continually to re-state the principles on which civilised relationships between pupils and teachers need to be based.

Intervention is a powerful story of incredible grace in the midst of hardship, danger, disappointment and heartache. It is an epic true story of consistent intervention in the life of an individual from childhood to adulthood. This literary work is a biographical narrative which points to hope in spite of the brokenness that humanity experiences in this world. Richard Smith shares true intimate details of various unique circumstances he encountered and endured, which should have placed him on a tragic trajectory towards ultimate hopelessness, but in each circumstance, intervention is made on his behalf. If you are feeling lost, hopeless, defeated, worthless, or empty, this book will be a great encouragement to you as it points you towards hope beyond measure. Take a journey through the life of an individual who has felt all of the things previously mentioned and see how he discovered that he was purposely created and that all of the hard things he has faced in life only pushed him closer to being who God ultimately created Him to be. May this biographical effort inspire you to see the value in even the hardest things you have faced in life. May it lead you to look to the greatest hope offered to mankind, which is highlighted in the final chapter. As you read Richard's story, consider your own story and identify moments of intervention within it.

Jamaican Volunteers in the First World War

Newly available in paperback, this study explores the dynamics of race and masculinity to provide fresh historical insight into the First World War and its Imperial dimensions, examining the experiences of Jamaicans who served in British regiments.Reluctance to accept West Indian volunteers was rooted in the belief that black men lacked the qualities necessary for modern warfare. This, combined with fears over white racial degeneration, resulted in the need to preserve established hierarchies, which was achieved through the exclusion of black soldiers from the front line and their confinement in labour battalions. However, the author shows that despite this exclusion, the experience of war was invaluable in allowing veterans to appropriate codes of heroism, sacrifice and citizenship in order to wage their own battles for independence on their return home, culminating in the nationalist upsurge of the late 1930s.This book offers a lively and accessible account that will prove invaluable to those studying the Imperial dimensions of the First World War, as well and those interested in the wider notions of race and masculinity in the British Empire.
China's Engine of Environmental Collapse
As the world hurtles towards environmental oblivion, China is leading the charge. The nation's CO2 emissions are more than twice those of the US with a GDP just two-thirds as large. China leads the world in renewable energy yet it is building new coal-fired power plants faster than renewables. The country's lakes, rivers, and farmlands are severely polluted yet China's police state can't suppress pollution, even from its own industries. This is the first book to explain these contradictions. Richard Smith explains how the country's bureaucratic rulers are driven by nationalist-industrialist tendencies that are even more powerful than the drive for profit under 'normal' capitalism. In their race to overtake the US they must prioritise hyper-growth over the environment, even if this ends in climate collapse and eco-suicide. Smith contends that nothing short of drastic shutdowns and the scaling back of polluting industries, especially in China and the US, will suffice to slash greenhouse gas emissions enough to prevent climate catastrophe.
