It also explores the interest groups and policy makers who impeded its achievement and the attitude of teacher unions and the teachers themselves to the establishment of such a body. Buck, an orphaned Tennessee farm boy seeking his maternal grandfather in a journey across the South, reunites with his grandfather in the Indian Nations. In far south Texas, he becomes entangled in the mystery of the San Saba Gold. Through all of this, he renews his courtship with Becky.

Taking command of the French Xe Arm e he was charged with making the main thrust of the offensive and driving his forces rapidly eastwards, severing the jugular vein and closing the neck of the 'poche', cutting off the escape route of the enemy and trapping them inside the salient.
